Polar Bear and Puffin Arctic Wildlife Painting Balloon Animal Art on Linen

Polar Bear and Puffin Arctic Wildlife Painting Balloon Animal Art on Linen

By Sofía Cristina Jiménez

Located in FISTERRA, ES

Polar bear and puffin wildlife painting combining Arctic imagery, balloon animal aesthetics and ecological reflection on raw linen canvas. The Polar Bear and the Puffin – Plastic Nature VIII is an original acrylic painting by Sofía Cristina Jiménez from her ongoing Plastic Nature series. The work presents a polar bear and a puffin transformed into inflatable figures, positioned within an Arctic seascape where floating ice, reflective water and distant frozen horizons establish an atmosphere of stillness and vulnerability. Combining wildlife painting, balloon animal imagery and contemporary ecological themes, the work explores the increasingly complex relationship between nature, representation and environmental awareness. At the center of the composition stands a monumental pale-blue polar bear rendered as an inflatable structure. Its segmented surface recalls balloon sculptures and manufactured objects, creating a deliberate contrast between the symbolic weight of the animal and its apparently artificial form. Nearby, a puffin appears both perched and in flight, introducing scale, movement and narrative tension while reinforcing the fragile balance of the Arctic ecosystem. Throughout the Plastic Nature series, Sofía Cristina Jiménez transforms wildlife subjects into inflatable figures that occupy landscapes associated with environmental vulnerability. Rather than illustrating ecological issues directly, the artist creates subtle visual displacements that encourage viewers to reconsider familiar animal imagery. The balloon animal aesthetic introduces a layer of cultural mediation, suggesting how contemporary society increasingly encounters nature through images, symbols and representations. A significant feature of the painting is the use of raw linen. The upper portion of the composition remains intentionally unprimed, allowing the natural texture and color of the linen support to remain visible. This material decision activates the surface of the painting while establishing a striking contrast between the synthetic appearance of the inflatable animals and the tactile reality of the painted landscape. The restrained palette of icy blues, whites and natural linen tones reinforces the Arctic setting while creating a sophisticated chromatic balance suitable for contemporary interiors and collections focused on wildlife art, environmental themes and contemporary figurative painting.
