About the Item

An important French painting from the second half of the 19th century. This oil-on-canvas painting, attributed to the celebrated French painter Henri Félix Emmanuel Philippoteaux (1815–1884), is signed "H.P." in the lower right corner and depicts a monumental battle scene of extraordinary visual impact. The painting depicts the fierce charge of a French infantry unit advancing through artillery smoke, their rifles fitted with bayonets, while the ground is strewn with wounded soldiers and fallen horses. In the background, surrounded by thick clouds of dust and smoke, an officer on horseback watches the battle unfold, adding depth and breadth to the entire scene. Henri Philippoteaux was one of the most important history and battle painters of 19th-century France. A student of the renowned Léon Cogniet, he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1833 and, throughout his career, received prestigious official commissions from King Louis-Philippe for the Musée de l’Histoire de France at the Palace of Versailles. His work focuses primarily on the Napoleonic campaigns, the Crimean War, the French colonial wars, and major events in national history, which he examines with extraordinary documentary rigor and a powerful narrative. His works are now part of the collections of some of the most prestigious French and international museums, including the Musée de l’Armée in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This painting showcases all the qualities of his work: a highly balanced composition, a vigorous brushstroke that conveys movement, a refined palette of earthy and gray-blue tones, and a skillful interplay of light and shadow that heightens the dramatic impact of the scene. The smoke from the explosions becomes an essential element of the perspective composition, blending figures and landscape into a highly effective visual scene. A large-scale painting with great appeal to collectors, it is ideal for collections dedicated to military art and perfect for prestigious settings—whether classical or contemporary—where it can fully showcase its dramatic impact. The painting has been professionally restored through relining, replacement of the stretcher frame, and minor color restoration in areas with minor paint loss. The painting is in overall good condition.
