About the Item

Oil on Canvas. Lombard school of the late 1500s. The large scene depicts an angel in the foreground announcing to Joachim as he grazes his sheep, the imminent birth of his daughter; in the background, Joachim meets and embraces his wife Anne, who is waiting for him at the gates of a city: according to tradition, the two newlyweds, who were considered barren, after both receiving a visit from an angel, meet at the Golden Gate (of Jerusalem), symbolizing the beginning of salvation through the conception of Mary, the future mother of Jesus. The profile of the background city leads back to in Cremona, probably the city of the commissioner of the 'work, where Giovan Battista Trotti known as the Malosso (1555 -1619), Mannerist painter lived and worked to which the work refers by style, allowing a 'hypothesis attributive to him or his workshop to be formulated. The work previously retinted, shows slight color falls. It is presented with a lath frame. It has no signature of the artist.
