About the Item

William-Adolphe Bouguereau 1825-1905 French La fille du pêcheur (The Fisherman’s Daughter) Signed and dated “W-Bouguereau-1882” (middle right) Oil on canvas William Bouguereau's influence on 19th-century art is profound, earning him a cherished place in the French Academy. His frequent exhibitions at the Paris Salon led to the event being colloquially known as “Le Salon Bouguereau.” Among his numerous masterpieces, La fille du pêcheurstands out as an extraordinary work, epitomizing both the simplicity of life and the grandeur inherent in Bouguereau’s oeuvre. Bouguereau’s unparalleled ability to depict the moods and personalities of his subjects within classical settings is evident in this work. Influenced by the great Neoclassical artist Ingres, Bouguereau’s technique demonstrates an exceptional degree of finish and luminous coloration, characteristics of his prestigious education at the École Royale des Beaux-Arts. His portraits, especially those of peasant women and children, are among his most cherished works, with La fille du pêcheur being a particularly exquisite example. In this composition, a young girl stands against a historic column with a picturesque fishing village as her backdrop. Captured at the height of summer and her youthful vigor, she holds a basket, likely for collecting fish or other goods. Her gaze is both entrancing and coy, suggesting a moment of pure adolescent liveliness, possibly interrupted while running an errand. The intricate rendering of her dress and radiant skin, combined with her confident pose, imbues the subject with a vitality that seems to leap off the canvas. Bouguereau’s works are immensely popular among collectors worldwide and can be found in prestigious collections such as the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the New Orleans Museum of Art. La fille du pêcheur is included in the Bouguereau catalogue raisonné as 1882/06. Young girl from Tetouan, Morocco Signed (center right) Oil on canvas In this important oil on canvas, French Orientalist painter Charles Landelle captures the engaging visage of a young Moroccan woman in a moment of tranquil contemplation. Seated on the floor of what is almost certainly an opulent riad, the young woman wears an intricately embroidered Moroccan kaftan and headdress. The sumptuous patterns on the floor and in the background lend an additional warmth to the strikingly vivid red hues which dominate the composition and are a hallmark of Landelle’s work. The symbols behind the young woman may represent either the Jewish Star of David or the Islamic Seal...

Julien Deturck, pseudonym of Jules Alphonse Deturck, born in Bailleul on February 23, 1862 and died in Belvès on December 18, 1941, was a French engraver and pastel artist. In 1887, he was admitted to Alexandre Cabanel's class and was also a student of Léon Bonnat and Gustave Jacquet. Seeing the purity of his drawings, the latter advised him to focus on engraving. He was then admitted to the class of Louis-Pierre Henriquel-Dupont, whose engraver Jules Gabriel Levasseur was his substitute. In 1888, he was awarded the second Grand Prix de Rome for intaglio engraving. After graduating from the Beaux-Arts, he devoted himself primarily to engraving and pastel. He achieved his first success in 1894 for the engraving of a Tanagra discovered in Athens by the architect Titeux. He achieved his second success for the engraving The Dream of Eros after the painting by Jules Machard. He received a 3rd class medal at the 1899 Salon, then a silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. In 1901, he won the 2nd class medal at the 1901 Salon for the engraving The Young Brother after the painting by William Bouguereau. Adolphe William Bouguereau, born on November 30, 1825 in La Rochelle and died on August 19, 1905, was a French painter. In his realist paintings, he used mythological themes, offering modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female figure. He was one of the major representatives of French academic painting of the late 19th century. The Société Française des Amis des Arts was founded in 1885 at the Palais de l'Industrie for the development of the arts, supported by numerous distinguished subscribers: Messrs. Gaston Doumergue (President of the French Republic), Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Count Greffulhe, the brothers Alfred, Jules, and Léon Bernheim, Louis Boucheron, Edgar Brandt, Emile Buland, Paul Chabas, Viscount Guy de Dampierre, Colonel Francis E.
