Winthrop Duthie Turney Pigeon Hill, Rockport Signed lower left Oil on canvas 20 x 24 inches Exhibited New York, National Academy of Design, Artists of America, Sixth Annual Exhibition, 1949. Winthrop Duthie Turney was born in New York City and received his education at the Art Students League. He was affiliated with the Fifteen Gallery Group, Allied Artists of America, Brooklyn Society of Modern Artists, and the National Society of Mural Painters. Turney's work was showcased extensively, including at the Allied Artists of America, where he earned a prize in 1944, as well as the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Currently, his works can be seen at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He is featured in various publications such as Who Was Who in American Art, Dictionary of American Artists, Mallett, Davenports, Fieldings, The Artists Blue Book, and numerous others. He and his wife spent their summers painting in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Mountainville, New York. His creations reflect the impact of these places and his main home in Brooklyn. He utilized both oil and watercolor mediums, capturing still lifes as well as urban portraits from the subway and streets of Brooklyn that developed from his mural projects for the WPA during the 1930s.
