Title: Mid-20th Century Post-Impressionist Pastel of Fishing Boats and Harbour Crowd by Anne Marie Migette Perard (French 1902-1977) Medium: Pastel on unframed paper Size: 15.75 inches (height) x 11.75 inches (width) Condition: As is normal with unframed works on paper there are some minor old creases or paper edge curls/ tears - all of which should be covered over or smoothed out once framed; generally very good and sound. Provenance: as with all the works we have by this artist, it has come from the artists estate in France. Description: This expressive Mid-20th Century Post-Impressionist pastel by Anne Marie Migette Perard captures the colourful bustle of a fishing harbour with immediacy and charm. Rendered in rapid strokes and confident colourwork, the composition centers on a vivid green boat moored in the foreground, flanked by masts and sails in bold primary tones—red, orange, yellow, and blue—cutting through the hazy atmosphere of a working port. Figures line the quay in sketch-like silhouettes, mingling and bustling near the boats, while the soft outline of a coastal town—with its pointed spire and distant rooftops—emerges in layers of cool greys and pastels beyond the misty waterline. The background is intentionally blurred, giving a dreamlike effect and allowing the bright foreground elements to take visual precedence. Perard’s handling of pastel here is free and gestural, with both softness and energy in equal measure.
