About the Item

Title: “Campo del Príncipe“ Artist: Chico Montilla (Granada, Spain) Medium: Acrilic on canvas Dimensions: 97 × 130 cm Provenance: The artist's studio. Signed: down left corner. In «Prince's Field», Chico Montilla presents a luminous interpretation of one of the most iconic corners of Granada's Realejo district. The city unfolds through a sequence of simplified architectural forms nestled among gardens and cypress trees, where architecture and landscape merge into a harmonious balance of colour and structure. Warm greens, ochres, pinks and golden yellows bathe the composition in radiant light, transforming reality into a poetic evocation. Rather than depicting a specific place with documentary precision, the artist conveys the tranquil spirit of Granada, inviting the viewer into a timeless landscape where nature, history and architecture coexist in perfect harmony. ABOUT THE ARTIST Chico Montilla (Granada, Spain, 1961) is a contemporary Spanish painter whose work is distinguished by its luminous interpretation of Mediterranean landscapes, historic architecture and gardens. Through a refined visual language, he transforms familiar places into timeless, poetic compositions where colour and light become the true protagonists. In 1980, he moved to Barcelona, where he combined his studies at the renowned Massana School of Art with frequent visits to the Picasso Museum, the Joan Miró Foundation and Park Güell. While the works of Picasso and Miró left a lasting impression on him, it was Antoni Gaudí's architecture that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. The expressive use of colour, the harmony between nature and architecture, and the timeless atmosphere of Gaudí's creations inspired Montilla to develop the luminous palette and simplified forms that have become hallmarks of his painting. This period marked the beginning of a highly personal body of work, culminating in a series of paintings exhibited at one of the Fundación "la Caixa" exhibition spaces in Barcelona. In the spring of 1983, Montilla moved to Madrid, where he exhibited regularly in several galleries until 1988. He returned to Granada in 1996. Shortly afterwards, the Director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía visited his studio and, impressed by the strength and originality of his work, encouraged him to produce a series of large-scale paintings for exhibition in one of the museum's galleries. In recognition of his artistic career, Correos, Spain's national postal service, issued two commemorative philatelic collections featuring reproductions of his paintings: an eight-stamp series dedicated to Landscapes in 2003, followed by a second edition in 2005 presenting four additional works.
