About the Item

Title Mid 19th Century English Lake District Borrowdale Landscape Oil Painting Key Details Artist: English School, mid 19th century, circle of David Cox Title: A View of Borrowdale, as noted on the frame plaque Medium: Oil painting on canvas, framed Size: Canvas: 16 x 24 inches; framed: 21 x 30 inches Provenance: Private collection, England Condition: Very good and pleasing condition. The canvas has been relined and restored to a high standard. Description A finely handled mid 19th century English landscape oil painting depicting Borrowdale in the Lake District, Cumbria. The composition opens through a rocky mountain pass, with a winding path leading the eye past scattered boulders and a small cottage towards the softer hills beyond. The palette is warm and natural, with golden grasses, mossy greens, pale blue sky and deep brown rock forms giving the scene both clarity and atmosphere. At 16 x 24 inches, or 21 x 30 inches framed, the painting has a useful and elegant scale. It would sit particularly well above a side table, in a study, hallway, sitting room or country house interior, bringing depth and a quiet sense of place without feeling heavy. The warm earth tones would work beautifully with antique furniture, natural linen, dark wood, leather, stone, or more layered contemporary interiors. The work belongs to the tradition of 19th century British landscape painting, closely associated here with the circle of David Cox. There is a pleasing balance between topographical detail and romantic feeling, making it a strong choice for anyone drawn to the Lake District, English landscape painting, or interiors with a collected, quietly confident character. Artist Note David Cox was one of the leading figures of 19th century British landscape painting, particularly admired for his expressive handling of weather, atmosphere and rural scenery. This work is catalogued as English School, circle of David Cox, reflecting its close relationship to that tradition rather than a firm attribution.
