About the Item

David James, British (1853 – 1904) Atlantic Waves, North Coast Cornwall Oil on canvas Canvas size: 20 x 30 inches Overall size: 26 1/2 x 36 1/2 inches Signed lower right Provenance: Cooling Galleries. Private collection, United Kingdom Born in Ireland, with his real name ‘Joseph Donahue,’ the artist we know as David James was a British marine painter, active from 1872 onwards, who made a name for himself as an artist who almost exclusively painted marine landscapes, painting a number of superb works of the waves off the coast of Cornwall such as this. Exhibiting at the Royal Academy on multiple occasions from 1886 to 1897, James gravitated towards depictions of the sea after time spent in Yorkshire, and crashing waves became a signature of his oeuvre. His mature works depict the sea off the South-west coast of England, in Cornwall and Scilly. Working in oil-on-canvas, he rendered the power of the ocean and the atmosphere of the southern coast with an unrivalled talent and skill. Provenance: Cooling Galleries. Victorian Marine Seascape Large Oil Painting of Pure Seas and Shimmering Light

Victorian Marine Seascape Large Oil Painting of Pure Seas and Shimmering Light by the absolute Master of Pure Seas Paintings. This is a beautiful, ethereal work by Henry Moore (THE Henry Moore and not the famous Sculptor!). The seascape we have for sale is an exquisite example of Moore’s sea-painting (he began painting the sea in the late 1860s), this, produced at the height of his fame and talents, it was painted in 1891. In it he captures the rolling waves as they catch the light and conveys a cool beauty within this deceptively simple composition. There may be a hint of a vessel in the background but maybe it is a trick of the light!! The seagulls dance in the foreground. Moore manages to straddle two enormous art...
