About the Item

Edward Moran (American, 1829 - 1901) Boy with Dog on Dock Oil on canvas Signed lower left 22 x 36 inches Provenance: Sotheby's Sale no. 3255 Oct. 27-28, 1977 Page 58 Price on request This is a lovely and tranquil painting of a boy and his dog sitting on a dock by Edward Moran. The boy and his dog are looking out into a harbor with several sailing ships in the distance. Edward is the brother of painters Thomas Moran, and Peter Moran. All three artists achieved fame and American art market desirability throughout the decades, as all three became highly collectible. The figure of the boy in this seascape is reminiscent of the style of Winslow Homer. Edward studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia with Paul Weber and James Hamilton, and at the Royal Academy in England. He moved to New York where he stayed for the rest of his career. In New York he painted many of his seascapes including epochs of US maritime history
