About the Item

A fine impressionist landscape with a rocky path by American artist (Edward) Wilbur Dean Hamilton (1864-1943). Hamilton was born in Pennsylvania, studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and in 1883 moved to Providence, Rhode Island where he studied with Tomasso Juglaris at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1892, he returned to Boston, setting up a studio on Boylston Street and exhibiting at the Boston Art Club and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He became a teacher at the Massachusetts Normal Art School from 1892 to 1942 and ran a summer school in Kingston, Massachusetts, becoming known for his impressionist garden landscapes, as well as portraits, genre scenes. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, and housed in a molded giltwood frame, with some minor frame touch-ups. Dimensions: 30 in H x 26 in W, actual; 34.5 in H x 30.5 in W, framed.
