About the Item

Early 20th Century oil on canvas view of Collioure in the south of France, home to the Fauvists. The painting is initial signed E.L.Y bottom right (as yet undeciphered). The location is written twice to the back stretcher. Presented in a patinated wood frame. A charming painting which vividly captures a serene street scene in the iconic town of Collioure, bathed in the warm glow of sunlight. The dome of the church of Notre Dame des Anges is clearly visible to the right. The palette of soft pastels—rich ochres, gentle pinks, and serene blues—infuses the scene with a sense of tranquillity and nostalgia. The composition masterfully guides the viewer’s eye down the cobblestone street, framed by a series of quaint, rustic buildings that exude old-world charm. The gentle curves of the architecture, highlighted by subtle shadows, add depth and dimension. In the distance, figures stroll leisurely, enhancing the painting's peaceful ambiance. The juxtaposition of lush greenery against the earthy tones of the buildings highlights the harmonious blend between nature and human habitation. This artwork stands out for its skilful use of colour and light, inviting viewers to step into a timeless, sunlit moment. In the early 20th century Collioure became a center of artistic activity, with several Fauve artists making it their meeting place. André Derain, Georges Braque, Othon Friesz, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, James Dickson Innes, Léopold Survage and Tsuguharu Fujita have all been inspired by Collioure's royal castle, medieval streets, its lighthouse converted into the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges and its typical Mediterranean bay. Collioure's cemetery contains the tomb of Spanish poet Antonio Machado, who fled here to escape advancing Francoist troops at the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939.
