About the Item

Title Argentou Signed French Post Impressionist St Tropez Harbour Boats Pastel Key Details Artist: French School, mid 20th century, signed Argentou Title: St. Tropez Harbour Medium: Oil pastels on board, framed Size: Framed: 25.5 x 32.5 inches; painting: 22 x 28.75 inches Provenance: Private collection, France Condition: Overall very good and sound condition Signature: Signed lower left Description A signed mid 20th century French Post Impressionist harbour scene, depicting boats lined along the old harbour at St. Tropez. The composition is lively and well balanced, with masts, reflections and waterfront buildings arranged through strong linear drawing and blocks of colour. Blue water, red-roofed façades, cream buildings and warm ochre boats give the work a bright Mediterranean character, while the oil pastel medium keeps the surface fresh and expressive. At 25.5 x 32.5 inches framed, this is a strong size for a sitting room, hallway, study, bedroom or coastal interior. The palette would work particularly well with pale walls, natural wood, linen, blue accents, terracotta tones or more relaxed French-inspired schemes. Its horizontal format also makes it a useful piece above a console, sideboard or sofa. This is an appealing French Riviera subject with more character than a standard harbour view. The combination of St. Tropez, boats, colour and mid century French handling gives it an easy sense of place, while the signed oil pastel technique brings a lighter, more immediate quality suited to a collected European interior.

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting

By Lucien Adrion

Located in New York, NY

This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 19 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 27 x 32 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
