About the Item

Flying Woodcock at daybreak, oil on panel. Signed by Harald Klinckowström (1897–1974). This small yet atmospheric composition captures a woodcock in flight above a forest clearing at the first light of day. Against a luminous sky, the bird is silhouetted as the rising sun sends radiant beams across the horizon, filling the landscape in warm golden light. Below, loosely painted trees and dense woodland emerge from the morning haze, their forms suggested through expressive, sweeping brushstrokes rather than detailed description. A narrow stream or marsh in the foreground reflects the pale sky, reinforcing the tranquil mood of the scene. Executed in an impressionistic manner, the painting emphasizes light, colour and movement over precise realism. The broad, textured handling of the paint lends the woodland a sense of vitality, while the solitary woodcock, a recurring subject in Scandinavian sporting art, becomes the focal point of the composition. The work reflects Klinckowström's lifelong fascination with wildlife and the Nordic landscape, combining careful observation of nature with a poetic interpretation of dawn's fleeting light. Baron Harald Klinckowström was a Swedish painter, illustrator and author. He was the son of the zoologist, explorer and writer Baron Axel Klinckowström and Thyra Gyldén, and grew up in an environment where a deep appreciation of nature, wildlife and outdoor life became central to his artistic development. His sisters included the writer Thora Dardel and the equestrian and travel writer Linde Klinckowström-von Rosen. Klinckowström studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm during the early 1920s, where he received a solid academic education in painting and drawing. While grounded in traditional techniques, he developed a highly personal style characterized by expressive brushwork and an intuitive response to nature. Throughout his career he devoted himself primarily to landscapes, wildlife subjects, marine scenes and sporting motifs. Rather than presenting meticulously detailed zoological studies, Klinckowström sought to capture the atmosphere of the Nordic wilderness through bold brushstrokes, luminous colour and dynamic compositions. His paintings balance realism with an impressionistic freedom that conveys movement and the changing effects of light. In addition to oil painting, Klinckowström worked extensively as an illustrator and author, contributing illustrations to books and publications devoted to hunting, wildlife and outdoor life. His intimate knowledge of animals and their behaviour lent authenticity to both his paintings and illustrations, making him one of Sweden's best known painters of wildlife during the mid-twentieth century. Klinckowström exhibited regularly throughout Sweden and participated in exhibitions devoted to Swedish contemporary art and wildlife painting. Today his works are represented in several important Swedish public collections, including the Moderna Museet, Göteborgs konstmuseum, Malmö Museum, Norrköpings konstmuseum, and Eskilstuna konstmuseum.

Landscape with Poplar Trees, Expressionist Oil on Panel, Signed, 1940s, Framed

Landscape with Poplar Trees, Expressionist Oil on Panel, Signed, 1940s, Framed

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

A vibrant painting depicting an avenue lined with poplar trees in fall colors, prominently featuring a very large, centrally placed yellow poplar. Possibly an American poplar. The artist, Agda Holst, has employed a diverse palette of colors to the poplars, creating a dynamic and colorful composition. This oil on panel is signed and dated by Holst in 1948. The work exemplifies her use of color and form, characteristics that defined her artistic practice throughout her career. Agda Holst was a Swedish modernist painter known for her precise study of form, stylized compositions, and ability to merge structured geometry with expressive color. Her works, often still lifes, portraits, and figure studies, reflect a balance between naturalistic representation and modernist influences such as Cubism and New Objectivity. Holst's artistic journey began in 1907 at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, where she studied under Christian Krohg. Seeking further refinement, she moved to Munich between 1910 and 1911, studying with Julius Exter, known for his teachings in portrait and genre painting. In 1911–1912, she returned to Paris to study under Kees van Dongen, whose bold use of color and strong contrasts left a lasting impression on her work. The early 1920s marked another period of study in Paris, this time under André Lhote, who instilled in her a structured approach to composition and geometric clarity. Holst’s first public exhibition took place in 1916, when she displayed paintings in a bookstore...
