About the Item

The painterly work of Helga Scholler includes works from a period of more than 40 years and shows a range of uncompromising expressive works of all genres, representing a further development of Austrian Expressionism of the interwar period and adding a contemporary interpretation to this style. Color is the defining means of expression in Helga Scholler’s paintings. While duller shades and a more serious basic tenor dominate the works created during her time at the Academy in Vienna, the paintings produced later in Styria and during numerous study trips are characterized by strong and intense coloration, reflecting her positive attitude towards life. Over time, the vibrant color fields of the early works of the 1960s give way to a stricter and more expansive pictorial structure. At the same time, the harmony and resonance of colors increasingly become a formative stylistic device within her formalized compositions. In addition to numerous landscapes created directly from nature or based on watercolors, Helga Scholler shows a special affinity for floral still lifes. She reduces reality to clear color harmonies, creating an order on a higher artistic level. Depending on the degree of abstraction, the results range from stylized and abstracting to expressive and unruly; in every case, the magic of the flowers is translated into a concise and carefully composed language of form and color. Especially in her early work, there are also a number of impressive portraits and nudes that convince through a symbiosis of expressiveness and the elegance of color. Some examples of her artistic work reveal parallels to the work of her colleague Werner Augustiner, who in turn named Helga Scholler as a model for his floral still lifes. The spontaneity of the pictorial realization, together with the clarity and luminosity of her color spectrum, gives Scholler’s works an almost Mediterranean cheerfulness and allows the rigor of a thoughtful composition to recede into the background. As in the Tunisian watercolors of August Macke, the atmosphere created by color and light takes precedence over the accuracy of topographical depiction. The lyrical character of her artistic expression thus transforms the pictorial surface into a spiritual order of painted poetry. The present work is signed in the upper right corner, confirming its authenticity and direct attribution to the artist.
