About the Item

Beautiful signed divisionist oil on canvas landscape by sought after French post impressionist painter Henri Martin. The depicts pink and yellow dahlias in a garden, set beautifully against the dark green foliage. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 32"x28" Unframed: 24"x20" Provenance: Christie's London - Impressionist & Modern Art - July 3rd 1970 Lot 281 Private Collection - Switzerland Born in Toulouse to a French cabinet maker and a mother of Italian descent, Martin successfully persuaded his father to permit him to become an artist. He began his career in 1877 at the Toulouse School of the Fine Arts, where he was under the tutelage of Jules Garipuy (he was also a pupil of Henry-Eugéne Delacroix). In 1879, Martin relocated to Paris and with the help of a scholarship, was able to study in Jean-Paul Laurens' studio. Four years later, he received his first medal at the Paris Salon, where he would hold his first exhibition three years later in 1886. The year after he won his first medal, Martin was awarded a scholarship for a tour in Italy, where he studied the work of veterans such as Giotto and Masaccio. His 1889 canvas submission to the Salon earned him the gold medal for work that has been described as Pointillist. That same year he became a member of the Legion of Honour. At the 1900 World Fair, he was awarded the Grand Prize for his work. During this period, he became friends with Auguste Rodin. Although Martin's work as a neo-impressionist is not considered groundbreaking, his work was rather well-received, and has been associated with world-class symbolist painter, Puvis de Chavannes. Due to his introverted temperament, Martin decided to move away from Paris. After a decade of searching for an ideal home, Martin bought Marquayrol, a mansion overlooking La Bastide du Vert, near Cahors. He performed his best work in the new tranquil environment, and died there in 1943. Martin also taught; among his pupils was the American painter Nellie Ellen Shepherd

The work depicts summer flowers - yellow sunflowers and pink foxgloves - blooming outside a cottage on a hilltop. The cottage is white with a red roof and green shutters. A tree branch overhangs the path beside the cottage. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 38"x46" Unframed: 29"x37" Provenance: Private collection - France A pupil of his father Alphonse Chigot, Eugène Chigot enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1880, where he studied under Vayson, Cabanel and Bonnat. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1884-1924, and was commended by the jury of 1885, winning a third-class medal in 1887 and a second-class medal in 1890. After travelling in Spain, in 1887 he settled in Étaples in Flanders, before returning to Paris, where he became a founder of the Salon d'Automne. He was awarded bronze medals at the Paris Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1990, and held his first solo show in Paris in 1905. He was an inspector of the museums of painting and drawing curated by the French maritime ministry, and an Officer of the Légion d'Honneur. His early works are large-scale history paintings, which he quickly relinquished in favour of landscapes, depicting scenes from his travels in southern France, Italy, the Auvergne, Vendée, Brittany and Flanders, whose light he particularly appreciated. Some of his works are reminiscent of paintings by Pissarro...
