About the Item

Japanese Paris school mid 20th century impasto oil on canvas female nudes in a landscape by Hoshizaki Kōnosuke 星崎孝之助. The painting is signed and dated (1934-44) bottom right centre and is presented in a period giltwood and hessian covered frame. This magnificent and vibrant painting vividly captures a tranquil, idyllic scene set by a flowing river amid towering cliffs and lush greenery. The composition features two nude female figures absorbed in serene contemplation of nature. Further in the background three other nude figures regards the scene. The vibrant hues of the landscape, with rich browns, deep greens, and glistening blues, highlight the earth’s textures and the shimmering water. Hoshizaki Kōnosuke's technique creates a wonderful surface texture with thick use of paint in an impasto technique to create different levels to the surface of the painting. The artist skilfully contrasts the rugged, sunlit hills in the background with the more intimate, shaded riverbank scene in the foreground, creating depth and dimension. A lone figure reclines near the river regarding her reflection, adding a touch of solitude and introspection. The interplay of light and shadow throughout the piece enhances the dynamic flow of the river and the gentle rhythm of the surrounding trees. This evocative painting invites viewers into a peaceful yet dynamic interplay between human figures and nature, offering a timeless glimpse into harmony and reflection. Hoshizaki Kōnosuke was born in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan in 1905 and died in 1994 in Kanagawa Prefecture. He worked primarily as a Western-style oil painter (yōga). He travelled to France in 1928, where he studied literature and oil painting. He subsequently exhibited in Paris, including at independent salons and other exhibitions. This painting is from that Paris period. After World War II, he maintained strong ties with Paris and moved between France and Japan during his career. He became associated with the influential Japanese art group known as the Niki-kai. Hoshizaki's work belongs to the tradition of Japanese artists who absorbed European modernism while retaining a distinct Japanese sensibility. His paintings are generally oil on canvas and often show an interest in symbolic or imaginative themes. His paintings are included in national and private collections worlwide including: LA CREATION (1971), held by the The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Early 20th century Paris played a vital role in the Japanese artistic imagination. Japanese artists travelled to Paris in the 1920s for the same reasons as others: it was the most exciting city in the world, it was a refuge from a constricting society at home, and it was the city for art. One of its greatest exponents was the painter Fujita Tsuguharu (1886-1968) a contemporary of Yonosuke Hoshizaki also friends with the likes of artists such Modigliani, Soutine, Picasso and Matisse,
