About the Artist: James Murray was an American artist active in New York during the mid-20th century. Although little biographical information about Murray has been documented, surviving evidence associates him with the Pan American Art School on West 57th Street in New York City. His known work includes representational subjects painted in a loose, modernist manner characteristic of the postwar period. Murray's New York harbor scenes demonstrate an interest in the city's maritime and industrial environment, using bold compositions, simplified forms, and expressive handling of color and paint.
