About the Item

Signed "J. V. D. Helder" in the lower right corner. Signed “J. v. d. Helder” lower right. J. v. d. Helder is documented as a pseudonym associated with the Austrian painter Georg Fischhof (1859–1914), who was known for his atmospheric marine and harbor scenes. The present work is consistent in subject and style with paintings associated with this pseudonym; however, the attribution to Georg Fischhof is presented on the basis of the documented use of the name J. v. d. Helder rather than as a definitive authentication. This atmospheric European harbor scene depicts a lively waterfront animated by sailing boats, fishermen and figures gathered along the quay. Dominating the left side of the composition, a traditional windmill rises above a group of picturesque houses, while several boats with colorful sails are moored in the calm waters of the harbor. The artist has paid particular attention to the numerous details that bring the scene to life, from the figures working around the boats to the small rowing boat in the foreground and the distant sails disappearing toward the horizon. The broad expanse of water and softly illuminated sky create a remarkable sense of depth and openness, while delicate reflections on the surface of the harbor contribute to the painting’s peaceful atmosphere. Executed in a traditional figurative manner with an Impressionistic sensitivity to light and atmosphere, the work combines finely observed architectural and maritime details with a freer treatment of the sky and water. The warm tones of the buildings and sails contrast beautifully with the subtle blues, greys and pastel hues of the surrounding landscape. A charming and highly decorative maritime painting, capturing the timeless character and everyday activity of a European coastal harbor. Harbor with Moored Boats at Sunset, Impressionist Coastal Oil Painting

Harbor with Moored Boats at Sunset, Impressionist Coastal Oil Painting

By Ezelino Briante

Located in Genève, GE

Dimensions with frame: 34,5 x 48 x 4,5 cm. Signed "E. Briante" in the lower left corner. This atmospheric harbor scene captures a quiet waterfront at dusk, where moored boats rest on softly rippling water beneath a dramatic sky. Warm bands of orange light along the distant shoreline contrast with cool gray clouds, suggesting the final glow of sunset fading across the horizon. Painted in oil with expressive, confident brushwork, the artist emphasizes the movement of water through broken reflections and layered impasto. The boats, rendered with bold dark forms and flashes of color, anchor the composition while guiding the eye into the distance toward the clustered buildings and masts beyond. The restrained palette of muted grays, ochres, and rust tones evokes the mood of a working harbor at day’s end, balancing industrial character with poetic tranquility. Subtle highlights on the water surface create a luminous effect, giving the scene depth and atmosphere. The painting reflects modern European coastal traditions, combining impressionistic spontaneity with strong compositional structure. Both decorative and evocative, it would suit collectors of marine painting as well as designers seeking sophisticated maritime artwork. harbor scene oil painting, marine painting boats, impressionist harbor artwork, coastal oil painting, moored boats painting, maritime landscape oil painting, seascape harbor painting, vintage marine artwork, European harbor painting...

Boat Tartanes, Calm of the Evening, Oil on Wood, Mid-20th Century, Unframed

By Elie Bernadac

Located in Genève, GE

Beautiful oil on panel signed by the French painter Elie Bernadac, depicting elegant Mediterranean tartanes peacefully moored at dusk. The work is further authenticated by the artist’s original studio label on the reverse, inscribed “Tartanes – Calme du soir” and bearing the artist’s address in Nice. This luminous composition perfectly captures the tranquil atmosphere of a southern harbor at evening time. The tall sails, rendered with expressive palette knife and brushwork, create a rhythmic vertical structure reflected delicately in the still water below. Bernadac employs a refined palette of muted blues, soft greens, warm ochres, and touches of coral red, evoking both the fading light of sunset and the quiet poetry of maritime life. The painting demonstrates strong affinities with mid-20th century French Mediterranean painting and modern Post-Impressionist marine art. The textured surface and fluid handling of light lend the composition remarkable movement and atmospheric depth. An elegant and highly decorative work, ideal for collectors of: * French Riviera paintings...
