About the Item

Texas artist Jim Stoker began developing his confetti-splatter technique of painting in 2000 to depict his interpretations of the unique flora along the Guadalupe River, as well as the native plants of Central and West Texas. A self-described colorist, he paints vivid landscapes over a patterned ground of controlled chaos made by splattering ten pigments over a primed canvas littered with confetti. Stoker has used the technique to paint the canopy of the goldenball leadtree, ocotillo plumes, brilliant fall foliage of the sumac, honeycomb limestone rocks, and most recently the granite spiderwort. "Nature has been my teacher," says Stoker, who has worked for the U.S. Forest Service and has backpacked, camped, and canoed in many wilderness areas. He and his wife Eloise, also an artist, spend time at their cabin on the Guadalupe River and have been active environmentalists. Jim Stoker was born and raised in rural East Texas. He received his BFA from The University of Texas at Austin in 1957, and his MA from New Mexico Highlands University in 1962. Stoker painted throughout a teaching career which culminated in a 30-year tenure at Trinity University in San Antonio. The dimensions including the artist-made frame are 35 x 49 inches.

“Anne Weary, who grew up as a Texas cowgirl, is at home in the outdoors and knows its ways and its language. There is a sort of very quiet but very powerful mysticism in her work, a sense of presence that goes quite beyond words,” wrote poet and University of Texas at Dallas professor Frederick Turner in the American Arts Quarterly. Dallas born Weary studied under Olin Travis, Octavio Medellin and Chapman Kelley before earning a 4 year certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with awards for excellence in drawing. In 2008, Weary left Texas for a three year sabbatical in Southern California where she began drawing in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve with red conté...
