About the Item

A moody expressionist painting of the Upper Delaware River, done in the style that earned John Fulton Folinsbee his well-deserved reputation as an exceptional landscape painter of the period. This painting was done in 1932, after Folinsbee's trip to Europe, where he diligently studied the works of Cezanne and adopted his desire to reveal the structural forms and loose brushstrokes. Folinsbee conveys the feeling of a place with his painterly expression of light and atmosphere. This painting appears in the Vose Galleries, Appraisal of Pictures, Estate of John F. Folinsbee, Boston, 1972, no. 365. It is also accessible on the Artist's online Catalogue Raisonné. The canvas is signed in the lower left-hand corner. Presented in a gilt wood frame with a linen inset border.
