About the Item

Sweeping Scottish landscape of Solstice with the famous Celtic Standing Stones over the Moor of Machrie, The stone silhouettes rise up over the marsh in a dramatic sunset by Scottish artist John MacWhirter (1839-1911), signed, oil on canvas and framed. Painting in the 1800s of the real stones, still standing. The dusky clouds seem to point to the Standing Stones in orange sunset skies and the long grey blue cloudy streaks. The skies are reflected in the marsh waters just before evening descends. This is an emotional work by MacWhirter, better known for idyllic landscapes of forests and fields. Influenced by JMW Turner, the skies and color are expressive rather than realistic, evocative and emotional more than a landscape. The Standing Stones in Scotland have found new fame in the Outlander series, as the Stone Circle beckons those with the gift to travel and hurtles them back in time. The Stones evoke Scottish lore, Druid rites, Solstice and Celtic traditions steeped in romantic mystery. The spiritual and mystical sentiments of the Standing Stones is well presented here, in that moment after the sun sets before the colors in the sky turn to darkness. The Stones are presented against the dark and bright skies, as sentinels of another world in ancient Celtic faith. For all these reasons Standing Stones of Machrie Moor by this Academy-qualified artist is in a class of its own. In overall very good condition, well framed and ready to hang!

Scottish Iona Island, Seas, shore, sails and coastline, 19th Century

By Duncan Cameron

Located in Hillsborough, NC

Fine painting of iconic Iona Island coast by celebrated Scottish artist Duncan Cameron (1837-1916). Renowned for his landscape paintings, this work captures the natural light on the sea, sand and rocks with splashes of rich color under a big sky. Iona off the west coast of Scotland, has attracted artists for for its dramatic scenery and northern light, including the Scottish Colourists who favored the fresh pure light. The cliffs and coastal rocks are reminiscent of works by Samuel Peploe, John MacLauchlan Milne, Francis Cadell, and Duncan Fergusson of this fabled island. In 1876 Cameron won a Gold Medal for landscape painting, at the Crystal Palace exhibition. The year after this painting (circa 1870s) Cameron began exhibiting in the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists, and Royal Scottish Academy, showing his work consistently from 1880. Other venues for exhibiting his work include the Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work is sold today in Fine Art Galleries in the UK and in Saltire Gallerie, USA. His landscape paintings are widely acclaimed, and this landscape painting of considerable size and detail is a fine example. Born in Perthshire, Cameron studied in Dundee and in South Kensington, London. He later died in Edinburgh. The highest auction sale of his work reached nearly 20,000 GBP. He was widely acclaimed as a landscape artist, painting Scottish farmlands and haystacks, coastal scenes and lochs. In this work the colors of the sea change from blue to green with white crests of waves. The rocks have splashes of red, rust and orange, and the beach has red and green in the sand. Water laps at the edge of beach and rock. A sailboat is a focal point, with distant sailboats on the water, and a rowboat by the central sailboat. A hill rises behind the beach painted...

By Francis E. Jamieson

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

"The Harbour Mouth" by F. E. Jamieson (British 1895-1950) signed lower corner with the artists pseudonym 'Phil Hips' oil painting on canvas, unframed canvas: 16 x 24 inches Fine quality antique oil painting by the much admired and celebrated British artist F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950). The painting is signed by Jamieson to the lower corner with one of his pseudonym's "Phil Hips". The painting captures this rarer subject for the artist, depicting the mouth of a coastal inlet harbour entrance. F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950) We are extremely fortunate to have been handling the works of the enigmatic British artist, F. E. Jamieson since the year we began art dealing, 1989. Over this time, coupled with our love of the Scottish landscape, we have bought and sold many hundreds of his paintings, in all their various guises and subjects and are considered by many to be a leading authority on the artist and his work. We are also in the early stages of publishing the Catalogue Raisonne for this artist, of which this painting will be featured. Mr. Jamieson was largely a painter of Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Born in 1895, Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. He was an ambitious man and keen to sell more works than through just one shop. In order to do this, he started to sign his works with pseudonyms other than his own name, in order that he could sell his work to a wider audience. It worked and it is considered that Jamieson at least 15 different pseudonym names on his paintings. In addition to selling through furniture shops, Jamieson would travel door to door offering his paintings to housewives and private buyers. In our years of researching the artist, we heard one story related to us by an old customer who remembers that Jamieson started selling door...
