About the Item

Title: Promenade in Sant Feliu de Guíxols Artist: Josep Amat Pagès (Barcelona, 1901 – 1991) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 50 x 65 cm (approximately 19.7 x 25.6 in) Support: Canvas mounted on a wooden stretcher Signature: Signed “Amat” in the lower right corner Provenance: Barbié Gallery, Barcelona (label on the reverse) Condition: Very good Period: Mid-20th century Style: Mediterranean post-impressionism with loose brushwork and a vibrant palette A luminous Mediterranean coastal scene by renowned Catalan painter Josep Amat Pagès, depicting the seaside promenade of Sant Feliu de Guíxols on the Costa Brava. Executed circa 1980, this oil on canvas exemplifies the artist’s modern interpretation of post-impressionist light and atmosphere. Amat was one of the leading figures of 20th-century Catalan painting, closely associated with the renewal of Mediterranean landscape painting. His works are held in important public and private collections and he exhibited regularly at Sala Parés in Barcelona for over four decades. The composition captures everyday leisure by the sea: figures strolling, seated on benches beneath trees, with the Catalan flag subtly waving in the background. The scene radiates serenity, refined color harmonies and the unmistakable Mediterranean light that made Amat internationally admired. Work Description Promenade in Sant Feliu de Guíxols is a charming open-air scene capturing everyday life on the seafront promenade of this coastal town in Catalonia. People are seen sitting on benches, walking, or simply enjoying the warm daylight. In the background, the sea, a rocky hill, and a white sail reinforce the identity of the setting. The trees in the foreground cast dappled shadows on the sand, and a Catalan flag waves gently in the breeze, adding a symbolic local reference. The brushwork is agile and spontaneous, and the vibrant colors reflect Amat's mastery in capturing Mediterranean light and atmosphere. This type of scene was recurrent in Josep Amat's oeuvre, especially during his extended stays in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and other coastal areas. The painting conveys serenity and a sensitive, affectionate gaze toward ordinary life. Artist Biography: Josep Amat Pagès (1901–1991) Josep Amat Pagès was a prominent Catalan painter of the 20th century, born in Barcelona. He trained at the Llotja School of Fine Arts and was deeply influenced by Joaquim Mir, whom he met in 1924. In the 1930s, he traveled to Paris, where he discovered the work of Albert Marquet and Raoul Dufy, whose color and compositional approaches shaped his evolution. He exhibited regularly at Sala Parés in Barcelona for over four decades and served as a professor of landscape painting at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi from 1941 to 1971. Amat focused on urban and marine landscapes, especially scenes of Barcelona and the Costa Brava, such as Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where he spent long periods. His style evolved from impressionism to a more personal language, marked by loose brushstrokes and vivid color, with influences from fauvism. Awards and Recognition: Third Medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Madrid, 1940) Grand Sant Jordi Prize (1955) Creu de Sant Jordi (1988) His work is part of major public and private collections, including the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. Artistic Influences Josep Amat Pagès’ pictorial development was shaped by key artistic influences, which defined his visual language, especially in his handling of light, color, and everyday scenes: 1. Joaquim Mir (1873–1940) A decisive figure in Amat’s artistic path. Mir’s lyrical and spiritual approach to the Catalan landscape inspired Amat’s atmospheric and color-rich interpretations. 2. Albert Marquet (1875–1947) Discovered during Amat’s travels to Paris in the 1930s, Marquet's subtle compositions and color harmonies influenced Amat’s simplified and luminous coastal scenes. 3. Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) Dufy’s decorative freedom and joyful palette encouraged Amat to embrace a more liberated use of color and expressive brushwork. 4. Fauvism and Post-Impressionism These movements inspired Amat's intuitive color usage, compositional freedom, and expressive interpretation of reality. 5. Catalan Luminism Although more modern in his approach, Amat carried on the legacy of Catalan luminists such as Eliseu Meifrèn and Santiago Rusiñol, with his focus on capturing the unique light of the Mediterranean coast.

Mediterranean Coastal Landscape with Farmhouse, Spanish Impressionist Oil Painting Artist: Joaquín Asensio Mariné (1890-1961) Title: Mediterranean Coastal Landscape with Farmhouse Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions (canvas): 33 × 41 cm / 13 × 16.1 in Dimensions (framed): 60 × 68 cm / 23.6 × 26.8 in Signature: Signed lower right Frame: Original carved frame included Condition: Very good overall condition with light age-related wear. Ready to hang. Description A superb original Spanish Impressionist oil painting depicting a traditional Mediterranean farmhouse overlooking the sparkling Catalan coastline. Painted by Joaquín Asensio Mariné, this luminous composition captures the timeless beauty of the Costa Brava through rich brushwork, harmonious colour relationships and an exceptional sense of Mediterranean light. Warm terracotta rooftops, silvery olive trees and the deep blue sea create an atmosphere of serenity and authenticity, transporting the viewer to the peaceful fishing villages and rugged coastal landscapes that have inspired generations of Spanish artists. Rather than focusing on meticulous detail, Asensio Mariné masterfully conveys atmosphere and emotion through confident painterly strokes and a refined, sunlit palette. The result is a highly decorative work that combines artistic quality with remarkable interior design appeal. This painting is equally suitable for collectors of twentieth-century Spanish art and for interior designers seeking authentic Mediterranean artwork capable of elevating coastal, contemporary, classic or organic modern interiors. An exceptional acquisition for collectors of Spanish Impressionism and for designers seeking authentic Mediterranean artwork with timeless decorative appeal. Biography Joaquín Asensio Mariné (Barcelona, 1890-1961) was a distinguished Spanish painter renowned for his landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and figurative works. Although largely self-taught, he established a successful artistic career through numerous solo and collective exhibitions across Spain and Latin America. His paintings are admired for their atmospheric light, balanced compositions and lyrical interpretation of the Mediterranean landscape. Today his works are increasingly appreciated by collectors for their decorative elegance and their important place within twentieth-century Catalan painting. Artistic Inspiration This painting reflects the luminous Mediterranean tradition developed by Joaquín Mir, Eliseu Meifrèn, Santiago Rusiñol, Modest Urgell, Joaquín Sorolla, Hermen Anglada Camarasa, Josep Amat and Francesc Vayreda. Its poetic atmosphere and expressive brushwork also evoke the decorative colour harmonies of Pierre Bonnard and Henri Manguin. Collectors searching for Spanish Impressionism, Catalan Impressionism, Mediterranean landscapes, Costa Brava paintings, European coastal art and museum-quality decorative paintings will immediately recognise the enduring appeal of this composition.
