This lovely and rare vintage American Modernist oil on canvas painting, (Circa 1940) titled " Menomonee Falls, Wi" was executed by the luminary early Wisconsin Regionalist artist, Robert von Neumann (1888-1976). It features a masterful painting technique, reminiscent of Cezanne in its slashing vertical brushwork and modernist forms. A richly colorful palette of earth tones, blues, greens, and yellows shimmer with brilliance. This fine work exemplifies an idyllic early Wisconsin rural life, from a simpler time. This larger sized painting is housed in its original artist made vintage frame and measures 28.5" High x 32.5" Wide ( Framed ). ***Robert von Neumann's exceptional 1940s larger easel paintings like this are quite rare and very saught after. This piece is one of two major Robert von Neumann paintings I have managed to acquire over the past 15 years.*** Robert Von Neumann was the quintessential Wisconsin Regionalist artist. He became famous for his dramatic and idyllic paintings of the hulking fisherman on Jones Island (a fishing village of old Milwaukee), hard at work on the frigid and rough waters of Lake Michigan. But with that same brush, he would lovingly paint his storied Jones Island bay scenes and lush Wisconsin landscapes with serenity and beauty. Mr. Von Neumann was a prize winning exhibitor at the Art Institute of Chicago and a teacher at the Art Institute of Chicago’s Oxbow Summer School of Painting. He taught at The University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee for more than 30 years, and represents the foundation of early-mid 20th Century Wisconsin art history, being one of its most respected art teachers and practitioners. . * Comprehensive documentation regarding this major Wisconsin artist is available upon request from The Museum of Wisconsin Art Archives. A rare and special 1936 Modern American Scene country landscape painting with figures by important Chicago artist (William) Davenport Griffen. Oil on canvas, signed and dated "Griffen ‘36", lower right. Image size: 18 x 20 inches. Framed size: 22 x 24 inches. (William) Davenport Griffen was born in 1894 in Millbrook, NY. He graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, IA in 1918 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering; however, Griffen’s true love was painting. In 1919, he enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1923-1928.
