About the Item

Painter Roy H. Brown was born in Decatur, Illinois in 1879. He received his artistic training at the Academie Julian in Paris as well as at the Art Students League in New York City. A member of the National Academy of Design, Brown also served as the organization'­s first Vice President from 1949 to 1950. In addition he was President of the American Watercolor Society from 1939 to 1940, and held membership in the New York Historical Society, the National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club, the Century Association, and the American Art Association of Paris. His paintings were awarded numerous medals and prizes during his career, and he exhibited extensively at prestigious venues such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Salmagundi Club, the National Academy of Design, the Baltimore Watercolor Club, and the National Arts Club. His works can be found in private and public collections across the United States, including those of the Art Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Springfield Art Association, the National Arts Club, the Hackly Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Institute, the Herron Art Institute, and the Decatur Art Institute. This painting itself measures 9 1/2" x 6 1/4". Title written on verso.
