Scott Moore was born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. He is an American landscape and seascape painter based in Stockton Springs, Maine. He is known for painterly realism that emphasizes how light falls on objects and landscapes, combining traditional techniques with a direct, spontaneous handling of paint and a modernist approach to color. Moore grew up outside Washington, D.C., in rural Maryland in a family of artists. His mother was a fashion illustrator, and his father worked as the art director for the Institute of Heraldry. Scott drew from an early age and knew he wanted to be a painter. His interest in history was shaped by family stories of his father’s World War II experiences and his grandfather’s Civil War service. He spent much of his childhood exploring the surrounding woods. In the 1960s, the family moved to the coast of Maine, settling in the Rockland area. In high school, Moore participated in debate and football, traveling around New England. He attended the Portland School of Art, graduating in 1978 with a BFA in painting. Although much of his formal instruction focused on Abstract Expressionism, his personal interests led him to study French Impressionism, nineteenth-century French academic painters, and American masters—especially Edward Hopper. After college, Moore returned to the Washington, D.C., area and began exhibiting at the Torpedo Factory in Arlington, Virginia. In the early 1980s, he moved back to Maine permanently. Painting has been his principal source of income since the early 1990s. He has lived in a nineteenth-century farmhouse in Stockton Springs overlooking Penobscot Bay since 1998, with his wife and daughter. Moore’s work reflects a deep engagement with history and the Maine landscape. He has taught at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, served as a consulting artist for Maine’s Percent for Art program, led workshops, including Maine Women in the Arts at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and curated exhibitions such as “Four Maine Painters” at the Maine Audubon Gallery. He is represented by several galleries in the United States and his paintings appear in private and corporate collections in the United States and Europe. His artworks have also been included in books such as Art of Acadia, Art of the National Parks, Painting Portsmouth, Visions in Granite, and volumes on the island light Monhegan and the Isles of Shoals. Moore continues to live and work in Stockton Springs, focusing on the coastal Maine landscape and related subjects.
