Autumn Landscape

By William Louis Sonntag Sr. 1

Located in Milford, NH

A wonderful Autumn landscape likely of the Hudson River Valley by the revered American artist William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900). Sonntag was born near Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Cincinnati, OH in the 1840’s to study art. He studied for a brief time with G. Frankenstein at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Art and his idealized paintings of American wilderness and visionary paintings of imagined European ruins were commercially successful. He traveled twice to Europe in the 1850’s to improve his skills, eventually settling in New York City. He joined the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited his works for forty years. His mature works identify him with the Hudson River School of landscape painters. A romantic and naturalistic painter of his surroundings, Sonntag also created idealized paintings of Roman ruins, recalling his European trips of earlier years. Sonntag was an Associate (1860) and Academician (1861) at the National Academy of Design, and a member of the American Watercolor Society, Artists Fund Society, and the American Art Union...

Boating, Early Autumn Oil Painting, Hudson River School, 19th Century

Boating, Early Autumn Oil Painting, Hudson River School, 19th Century

Located in New York, NY

Oil on canvas by American artist Joseph Rusling Meeker, painted in 1877. This signed original work measures 12 x 14.25 inches and depicts an early autumn landscape of the American South, showing two boaters on a tranquil lake rendered in the Hudson River School tradition. Signed lower left. The scene is intimate and quietly luminous — warm autumnal light filters through the canopy and reflects off still water, with the two small figures lending the composition a sense of human scale against the enveloping natural world. Meeker brings to this modest-sized canvas the same romantic atmosphere and careful observation of light that defines his larger bayou paintings...

Shipping Off the Coast

Shipping Off the Coast

By Thomas Luny

Located in Wiscasett, ME

Shipping off the coast by English artist Thomas Luny. Oil on canvas signed and dated 35' in the lower left. Nice period and possibly original frame. Thomas Luny (1759–1837), born in Cornwall, probably at St Ewe, was an English artist and painter, mostly of seascapes and other marine-based works. At the age of eleven, Luny left Cornwall to live in London. There he became the apprentice of Francis Holman, a marine painter who would have a great and long lasting artistic influence on Luny: Luny remained until 1780 in Holman's London studio, which, was first situated in Broad Street, St. George's, and later relocated to Old Gravel Lane. Examples of his work are exhibited at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter, and at The Mariners' Museum in Newport...

A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills

A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills

By Benjamin Williams Leader

Located in Wiscasett, ME

Oil on artist panel, signed and dated lower left. It measures 19.75" x 22.75" including the frame, which is likely the original. Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 – 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. The inspiration for these early works was the countryside around Worcester itself, "the cottages, farmhouses, lanes, hedgerows and churches, so exceedingly picturesque and beautiful". However, Leader did not finish his course of studies at the R. A, nor did he need to – his paintings proved to be in great demand by wealthy buyers and he achieved an enviable degree of commercial success within only a few years of his first sale. In 1857 he changed his name to Benjamin Williams Leader to distinguish himself from the many other painters with the surname Williams. In autumn of that year he travelled to Scotland, and painted A Quiet pool in Glen Falloch...
