About the Item

Period impressionist painting, 'Driving Cattle' is by Scottish 19th century artist William Mouncey (1852-1901). His characteristic style is evident in this painting of a Scottish woodland, painted with thick swirls of paint in the pale blue sky and outlines of color on the trees in russet, ochre and black. Cattle and a figure appear in the woodland, beside the tall trees that dominate the scene. Oil on board. Mouncey was born in Kirkcudbright, southern Scotland, and founded the Kirkcudbright Artist's Colony. His work embraced the impressionism of his time. Mouncey exhibited with the Royal Scottish Academy, but also in London, Philadelphia, the Carnegie Institute and in Dresden, Germany. 'Cattle Driving' is in a newer wooden frame with art glass. On the back of the frame is a tag from Aitken and Dott, well known art framers dating to 1842. In excellent condition, no issues noted. The frame has minor imperfections, but needs no restorative work. About 22" high and 17.5" wide in the frame.
