About the Item

Memory is a strange painter. It does not reproduce things as they were. It reproduces them as they felt. The colors are too saturated. The sky burns redder than any sky you actually saw. The green of the trees is almost aggressive in its aliveness. The fields glow gold and magenta as if lit from underneath, as if the earth itself is remembering alongside you. This is not exaggeration. This is truth. "Louder Than Memory" is a landscape from the artist's childhood — or rather, it is what that landscape became inside her after years of distance. The windmills stand on the horizon the way they always did, patient and permanent, turning slowly in a wind that still exists somewhere even if she can no longer feel it on her skin. Small figures walk the paths below — tiny, unhurried, belonging completely to a place and a time that she left behind but that never quite left her. There is something about the land where you grew up that no other place ever replaces. Not the most beautiful city, not the most exciting new home, not any amount of time or distance. It lives inside you at a frequency nothing else reaches. You hear it in certain songs. You smell it in certain weather. You see it — suddenly, without warning — in the colors of a sunset that reminded you, just for a second, of somewhere you were once simply a child with no idea how much you would one day miss it. These colors are that frequency made visible. Too bright for a photograph. Too alive for a postcard. Exactly right for a painting made from the inside out — from the place where home still lives, untouched and luminous, louder than anything memory usually allows itself to be. This painting will not sit quietly in your room. It will pulse. It will insist. It will remind you, every single time you look at it, that somewhere there is a landscape that is entirely, permanently, irreversibly yours. Abstract, 1971 By Dan Howard (b. 1931) Unframed: 29" x 35" Framed: 30" x 36" Signed Lower Left Influenced by artists of such varying styles as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, De Kooning and Jack Levine, as well as many of the German Neo-Expressionists*, Dan Howard's work often blurs the line between representational* and abstract art*. His experimentation with different canvas preparations, his use of intense colors and his expressive brush strokes have created a myriad of visual combinations in his characteristic larger-sized oil paintings. The result is an emphasis on audience participation and the role of individual interpretation. "I want to make the viewer part of the process. That makes for a richer experience," Howard says. Throughout his career, Howard has been both a dedicated art teacher-administrator and a gifted professional artist. He chaired the departments of art at Arkansas State University, Kansas State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Howard has received 100 prizes, awards and honors including the top awards in the three longest running national open painting competitions: Society of Four Arts, Palm Beach, Fla.; Butler Institute, Youngstown, Ohio; and Chautauqua Institution, New York. The Omaha World-Herald has acknowledged Howard as "Nebraska's leading award-winning artist." His work is a part of more than 600 public, private and corporate collections including Hallmark Cards, West Law Publishing, United Airlines, Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (3M), Holiday Inn...
