Antlers #5 is one of three towering paintings that comprise Lizbeth Mitty's Chandelier Triptych (shown in last photo above). A cascading light falls loosely down the dense dark canvas as a wave of varying values of white paint mark the surface. The work reads like a giant blind contour drawing where hand and memory work in perfect synchronicity. Returning to her studio after a trip to Spain in 2014, Lizbeth Mitty began painting chandeliers. For many years, she had been painting architectural memories. According to the artist, she finds beauty in the “deteriorating and overlooked corners of urban architecture and interiors”— as in her decadent floor-to-ceiling chandeliers. In these pieces, the chandelier consumes the entire height and breadth of the canvas; every single aspect of the composition is dedicated to this single object. Mitty's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in both the United States and abroad and is held in public and private collections including the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York State Museum, The Orlando Museum of Art, The Zimmerli Archive, The U.S. State Department, and Trierenberg Holding AG (Austria). Her studio is located in Brooklyn, NY. Mitty's work — described by New York Times critic Ken Johnson as a combination of “painterly verve and hellish beauty” — has long been concerned with examining and amplifying the intrinsic abstract beauty of deteriorating or overlooked corners of urban architecture and interiors. In 2015, one object, the chandelier, rose up from detritus to dominate and finally stand alone in Mitty's body of work.
