About the Item

Title French Modernist Reclining Female Nude Red Chalk Life Drawing Artist Jacqueline Boisselot French late 20th century Medium Red chalk and sanguine on artist paper unframed Size 19.75 x 25.5 inches height × width Signature Unsigned from the photographs provided Provenance Private collection Paris Condition Good overall studio condition. The sheet displays light creasing, gentle undulation and minor wear around the edges and corners. There is a small tear and associated creasing near the lower-left edge, together with faint surface marks and red chalk transfer visible on the reverse. The principal composition remains clear, strong and well preserved. Description An expressive reclining female nude study by French artist Jacqueline Boisselot, drawn in warm red chalk and sanguine on artist paper. The model is shown lying across a cushioned daybed, her head supported by one arm while her bent legs create a flowing sequence of curves through the composition. The figure is positioned horizontally across the upper half of the sheet, giving the work a calm, balanced structure. Boisselot uses confident red contours to establish the body, reinforcing the shoulders, torso, knees and extended lower leg with darker passages of line. The strong bend of the nearer knee creates a central focal point, while the model’s relaxed head and gently folded arms introduce a quieter, more intimate mood. Areas of rich sanguine shading surround the head, torso and upper legs, creating depth and separating the pale body from the cushions beneath. Softer orange tones are introduced behind the figure and along the edge of the daybed, adding warmth and variation without distracting from the drawing’s restrained character. The contrast between the deep red marks and the untouched paper gives the work an immediate and visually striking quality. Boisselot’s handling remains loose and exploratory. Repeated outlines, visible corrections and rapidly hatched passages preserve the energy of a drawing made directly from life. The face is only lightly suggested, allowing the rhythm of the pose and the sculptural arrangement of the body to remain the principal focus. The broad horizontal format and warm red palette make this a particularly decorative example of Boisselot’s figurative work. Presented in a simple frame with a generous neutral mount, it would work especially well in a bedroom, dressing room, study or layered gallery wall. The sanguine colouring gives the drawing greater warmth than a conventional graphite study, making it well suited to interiors featuring natural woods, linen, plaster and earthy neutral tones. Jacqueline Boisselot was a French artist known through her surviving work for expressive portraits, nude studies, still lifes and modernist compositions. Her drawings are characterised by confident observation, economical line and a sensitive approach to the human figure. For more information, please do contact us with any questions you may have. Studies of a Woman Sitting, Red Chalk Drawing, Modern British Artist, Framed

By James Stroudley

Located in London, GB

Red chalk on paper Image size: 21 x 14 1/2 inches (54 x 37 cm) Gilt frame James Stroudley Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year. From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. However, much of his later work was abstract. In 1971, his former student, Peter Coker, paid homage to Stroudley by including his work in the exhibition ‘Pupil & Masters’, held at Westgate House, Long Melford, Suffolk. Stroudley married three times, and his wives included the fashion artist to the Sun newspaper...
