Nude Sitting

By Howard Rogers

This artwork "Sitting Nude" c.1990, is an oil painting on hardboard panel by noted American artist Howard Rogers, b.1932. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork (panel) size is 8.85 x 11.85 inches, framed size is 17.75 x 21 inches. Framed in original wooden gold and grey frame, with fabric liner and gold bevel. It is in excellent condition, the frame have very small minor restorations, practically invisible. About the artist: Howard Rogers wanted to be an artist for as long as he could remember. "I had no idea what an artist was when I was a kid," he laughs. "But I had a distant cousin who had gone to art school and I saw some of his drawings. They really impressed me." Born and raised in San Diego, California, Rogers now focuses on the future: "I kind of enjoy today and tomorrow and to heck with yesterday." While in high school, Rogers took some art classes and served as an apprentice sign painter, eventually becoming a journeyman. He was also a member of his high school track team, competing in the high jump, the hurdles and cross-country, as well as doing some bike racing. Following a stint in the Army, he began training for the Olympics in bike racing, trying out in 1948, 1952 and 1956. Today, "I ride a stationary bike in front of my easel three times a week." After trying out for the 1956 Olympics...

The Bathers
The Bathers

The Bathers

By Charles Kvapil

Located in London, GB

'The Bathers', oil on canvas, by Charles Kvapil (circa 1920s). The world of art has for centuries depicted bathers in one form or another. Kvapil's version, inspired by Courbet and Cézanne, is wonderfully alluring. Four nudes appear near a secluded pond surrounded by verdant flora in this very sizeable artwork. As with other works by the artist, the bathers are portrayed as simply another natural entity in the rich, green environment. Although the bathers are in a group, each seems absorbed in their own thoughts, perhaps feeling their interconnectedness with the surrounding trees, the plants along the water's bank, and perhaps also, the fish in the pond. The artwork is in fair overall condition in its original frame. There's a slight blemish in the paint in the very lower left corner and characterful nicks and blemishes on the old frame. The artist signed the work in the lower right hand: 'Kvapil'. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video may be provided. As further background, bathing scenes were common throughout Renaissance art. In one of his greatest paintings from 1654, Rembrandt depicted Bathsheba resigning herself to the moral dilemma presented to her by the covetous King David, who spied on her as she bathed; one can’t help but wonder whether we are watching from his voyeuristic point of view. In 18th and 19th Century France, painters like François Boucher, J.A.D. Ingres, and Eugène Delacroix cast off the classical and biblical associations of the bathing scene and began to use it as a means of presenting the nude in a more naturalistic way. By the 1920s, the bather had become one of the most common motifs in modern art. Matisse, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Pierre Bonnard all took on the old trope and plunged it into the 20th Century. Cubism took the familiar figure of the bathing woman and deconstructed, rearranged, and refracted her back as if the scene were unfolding through the reflection in a mirrored disco ball...

Femme Nu - Post Impressionist Oil, Nude Figure in Interior - Henri Lebasque

By Henri Lebasque

Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire

A wonderful oil on canvas circa 1920 by French post impressionist painter Henri Lebasque. The work depicts a nude sitting on a red patterned rug in front a bed. A beautifully brushed piece. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 32"x28" Unframed: 24"x20" Provenance: Collection of Henri Bloch This work is included in the Catalogue Raisonne of Henri Lebasque prepared by Mme. Denise Bazetoux Daguerre - Paris 20th Dec 2016 - Lot 95 Henri Lebasque studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, then, after moving to Paris in 1886, studied briefly under Bonnat, then under Humbert, whom he assisted in the decoration of the Panthéon. More importantly, he met and learned from Pissarro. In 1893 he met Luce and Signac at the Salon des Indépendants, and as a result he adopted Pointillism for a few years. In the 1900s he lived in Lagny with his family and painted landscapes of the neighbouring Marne forest. His painting underwent drastic changes when he discovered the south of the country. He would thereafter live in other French regions: Vendée, Brittany and Normandy, where he stayed at Les Andelys for some time, but his home from home was between Sanary and Nice. He painted members of his family in the settings in which he lived, mostly in Provence. His work shares some themes of his friend Bonnard. But although he exhibited with the Fauves, and admired Matisse, Rouault, Dufy, Valtat and Manguin (who introduced him to the Midi), he remained distinct from them in style. Lebasque was well known in his lifetime. He collaborated on the decorations of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and of the Atlantic liner Paris. He is remembered for: Nymphs at their Bath; The Sunshade; Girl with Hydrangeas; Great Nude on a Pink Sofa. He took part in the following collective exhibitions: Salon des Indépendants, 1886; Salon des Artistes Français; and later the Salon d'Automne, of which he was a founding member in 1903 and on whose committee he sat until his death. A set of his works was shown in 1937 at Masters of Independent Art ( Maîtres de l'Art Indépendant) at the Petit Palais. In 1957, 20 years after his death, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice, and in 1981 his works were exhibited at St-Paul-de-Vence.
