About the Item

A captivating and sensuous nude rendered by celebrated French artist Robert Cami (1900-1975), this original ink-wash composition beautifully merges painterly intuition with technical restraint. Executed in the traditional Lavis technique, the work sits between drawing and painting, combining diluted ink washes with brushwork to create a rich study in tonal depth and fluidity. The reclining female figure, posed languidly on a couch, is portrayed with grace and subtlety. Her silhouette emerges through delicate gradations of sepia and gray, as shadows and highlights are masterfully dispersed to evoke soft volume and natural sensuality. The result is both intimate and refined—an exceptional example of mid-century European figurative art. Drawn on Vellum paper and signed by the artist in the lower right corner, the work is framed in a contemporary black wood frame with a textured finish and acrylic glass for preservation. A striking addition to any serious collection of 20th-century French works on paper. The Lavis technique involves using a pigment, often ink, that has been diluted in water and then applied with a brush. The art technique is between sketching and painting. The work obtained is generally monochrome, with a yellowish-brown, sepia, or gray tone. The washing indicates the relief of the model by distributing the shadows and the lights. Reference: Robert Cami (1900-1975) was a painter, etcher, engraver of wood and copper, and illustrator. From 1932 to 1942, he served as a professor of engraving at the School of Fine Arts in Bordeaux. During these years, he made numerous wood and copper engravings. From 1942, he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He held several official positions: member of the Academy of Arts, vice-president of "Trait", and a member of the French Illustrated Book committee, as well as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Among other distinctions: the Prix Florence Blumenthal in 1926, and the Grand Prix of the Fine Arts of Paris in 1957. Inspired by the European engravings of the 15th Century and those of Japan, his central motifs are nudes, landscapes, and city views. Among other activities, he illustrated books, including "Encore un Instant de Bonheur" (Another Moment of Happiness) by Henry de Montherlant and "Othello" by Shakespeare. He also worked on stamp projects and decorated the bronze doors of the French Embassy in Ottawa, Canada. His pieces are displayed in the Chicago Museum and numerous Modern Art Museums in France.
