About the Item

Antiveduto Gramatica or Grammatica (Rome, Italy, 1571 – 1626) Title: Magdalene Praying with a Skull Medium:Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 58 x 43.2 cm - with frame 85 x 72 x 6 cm Not signed Expertise by Gianni Papi, art historian Publications: Timeless, between nothingness and eternity, exhibition catalogue curated by Massimo Pulini, Aria Art Gallery, Florence (Italy); From Sacro to Profano, the Giorgio Baratti art collection from Milan, exhibition catalogue curated by Daiva Mitrulevičiūtė, Giovanni Matteo Guidetti and Ileana Maniscalco, (16 February – 27 September 2020), Vilnius, National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, pp. 506-509. The painting is dated around 1620s when Antiveduto’s career took a decided turn in a classicist direction. It is a very mature work by the proto-Baroque Italian painter. The painting depicts a Magdalene with sorrowing eyes and imposing hair. Although both the face and the hairstyle of the Magdalene, so thick and enveloping, are striking, what is most fascinating within the painting is actually the skull, depicted with great naturalism. The skull represents the most striking part of the painting. The way Antiveduto depicted the skull is an example of his taste of portraying a true, direct and unfiltered naturalism.
