Antwerpen 1899' Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: image size 65,5 x 81 cm, frame size 102 x 117 cm Biography: Constant Aimé Marie Cap was a Belgian genre painter and etcher born in Sint-Niklaas on 2 June 1842 and deceased in Antwerp on 9 October 1915. He studied first at the Academy of Sint-Niklaas and subsequently at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under prominent teachers including Polydore Beaufaux, Joseph Geefs, and Bernard Pierre Weiser. After completing his studies, he settled permanently in Antwerp, where he developed a successful artistic career and regularly exhibited at official Belgian Salons from 1865 onwards. Cap became renowned for his finely executed genre scenes depicting middle-class life in nineteenth-century Belgium. His paintings are characterised by careful observation, anecdotal storytelling, and a warm, intimate atmosphere. Particularly noteworthy are his depictions of modern life and technological progress, including elegant railway interiors, balloon flights, family scenes, and views of Antwerp. His work reflects the optimism and social changes of the late nineteenth century while preserving a meticulous academic technique. In addition to painting, Cap was an accomplished etcher. His graphic work demonstrates the same attention to detail and narrative quality found in his paintings. Several of his etchings are preserved in important public collections, confirming his reputation as both painter and printmaker. Today, works by Constant Cap are held in major museum collections. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp preserves examples of his oeuvre, including the painting Remembering the National Festivities of 1880. (Vlaamse Kunstcollectie) His prints and drawings are represented in the collections of the Rijksmuseum, which holds numerous works by the artist, and the Museum Plantin-Moretus, where examples of his etching work are preserved. Constant Cap’s work remains valued for its charming insight into nineteenth-century Belgian society and for its sensitive portrayal of everyday life. His paintings and prints offer a vivid record of a rapidly changing era while maintaining the elegance and craftsmanship associated with the Antwerp artistic tradition.
