Description
An elegant and economical standing female nude by Jacqueline Boisselot, executed in black ink with faint graphite construction lines on artist paper. The model is shown in profile, her body turned towards the left and one arm raised above her head, creating a long, flowing vertical composition.
Boisselot describes the figure through a remarkably restrained sequence of lines. Rather than modelling the body with extensive shading, she allows the contours of the shoulder, waist, hips and legs to establish the pose. The result is immediate and expressive, preserving the speed and concentration of a drawing made directly from the model.
The raised arm introduces a strong upward movement and gives the figure a sense of poise. The opposite arm bends across the body, while the legs are loosely indicated through long, tapering lines. These gestures create a gentle rhythm from the upper body down towards the feet and emphasise the natural shift of weight within the pose.
The profile of the head is especially delicate. A small number of decisive marks suggest the forehead, nose, lips and chin, while darker strokes describe the hair and the shadowed area around the neck. The facial features remain understated, allowing posture and line to convey the sitter’s presence.
Faint graphite marks remain visible beneath and around the darker ink drawing, revealing Boisselot’s process of establishing and adjusting the figure before committing to the final contours. These searching lines add depth and immediacy without distracting from the clarity of the finished study.
The pale ground is lightly worked with a translucent wash or surface preparation, giving the paper a soft, warm tone. The considerable negative space surrounding the model heightens the elegance of the silhouette and gives the composition a calm, modern quality.
The reverse carries a faint transferred impression of the figure, likely caused by contact with another sheet during studio storage. This provides an additional trace of the artist’s working environment and the physical history of the drawing.
From an interior perspective, this is a refined and highly adaptable work. Its restrained monochrome palette and tall portrait format would suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, studies or minimalist living spaces. It would also work particularly well within a gallery wall of modern figure studies and works on paper.
Jacqueline Boisselot was a French artist active during the late 20th century, known for expressive figure studies, portraits, interiors, still lifes, landscapes and abstract compositions. Her work is characterised by confident observation, simplified forms and a sensitive approach to line, gesture and spatial balance.
