About the Item

This oil-on-canvas portrait was painted in 1915 by the American artist Nicholas Richard Brewer (1857–1949). It captures a mother seated with her daughter and son, a classic example of Brewer's work as a prolific portraitist of socialites and families during the early 20th century. The painting showcases several hallmarks of the artist’s style and the era. First, as shown in the sitters’ arrangement, the subjects are arranged in a close, triangular grouping on a sofa, with the mother as the central anchor. The children's clothing is characteristic of the 1910s, featuring the daughter's oversized hair bows and the son's wide-collared white suit. Second, Brewer often used dark, neutral hues of gray, brown, or as in this case, green for his backgrounds. This choice made the subjects—often dressed in lighter, impressionistic whites and pinks—stand out. Third, the work is signed and dated "N.R. Brewer '15" in the lower right corner, a standard practice for the artist. Nicholas Richard Brewer was a well-known American landscape and portrait artist born in Minnesota. He traveled extensively across the U.S., fulfilling commissions for prominent figures including actors, musicians, and political leaders.
