About the Item

Orientalist Painter Pierre Alexandre Salles (Algeria 1867 - Algiers 1915) Portrait of a Young Algerian Woman Pierre Alexandre Salles (Saint-Denis-du-Sig, Algeria 1867 - Algiers 1915) studied in Paris in the atelier of Jean-Léon Gérôme between 1891 and 1895, before returning to work in North Africa. One of the places especially associated with him was Bou-Saâda. This dual background, combining French academic training with direct knowledge of the Maghreb, gives particular authenticity to his Orientalist subjects. Between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, fascination with the East and North Africa occupied an important place in the European imagination. Painters, writers and travelers sought there a different light, distinctive costumes, physiognomies and atmospheres perceived as distant from Western modernity. In this small painting, however, the artist avoids anecdotal exoticism and focuses entirely on the presence of the young woman. The sitter, beautiful and thoughtful, is depicted with large dark eyes, soft black hair, hoop earrings and a necklace with warm reflections. A pale turban frames the face and gives balance to the composition. The brushwork is free yet assured; diffused light and soft shadows model the features with delicacy. The pink tones of the garment respond to the orange hues of the jewel with refined chromatic sensitivity. Signed lower right. A small-scale work executed with real mastery, where confident handling, delicate color and direct observation come together in an intimate and compelling image. Good condition. Recent frame. The name of Pierre Alexandre Salles is closely linked to Bou-Saâda, an oasis town in the heart of Algeria, on the edge of the Saharan Atlas and a natural gateway to the desert. Between the late nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century, this place became renowned among French Orientalist painters, attracted by its dry golden light, earth-built architecture, lively markets, traditional costumes and a way of life still deeply rooted in local customs. Bou-Saâda was admired because it offered artists what many were seeking: authentic subjects, rich color contrasts and an atmosphere perceived as far removed from the great cities of Europe. A true seasonal artists' colony developed there, with painters staying for months to work from life, meet one another and exchange ideas and inspiration. The most celebrated name remains Étienne Dinet, who helped make Bou-Saâda famous in the French artistic world, yet many other painters connected with the Orientalist movement also worked there, including Pierre Alexandre Salles.
