About the Item

Viewing the delicacy and grace of this portrait, one can appreciate that British artist Rosa Koberwein (1876–1903) was well recognized during her career for producing excellent portraits of women and children. She was the choice of England’s royal family for a portrait of Princess Victoria of Wales (1868-1935) at age 10. That picture remains part of the Royal Collection to this day. While the unknown sitter is, herself, a beauty—and because Koberwein painted her, it’s likely she was a member of the aristocracy—her late-18th-century attire is puzzling. For example, the ruffled white cap with a dark ribbon would have been more expected on Martha Washington a century earlier, as well as the neck scarf. Perhaps it was all a bit of good fun, but the lady’s natural elegance is timeless. In original frame. Signature lower left; sixth detail photo.
