About the Item

A rare late 17th century religious work portraying a Catholic priest, likely a Jesuit, holding a burning heart inscribed with the Latin word 'Charitas', symbolizing the sitter’s divine mission of service.  The figure sits beside a crucifix, meeting the viewer’s gaze with kind eyes and a gentle half-smile, his rosy cheeks and serene expression emblematic of his virtue. His hand held towards his breast and shaped to form what is known as a 'pseudo-zygodactylus' gesture representing a maternal care for mortals and heavenly salvation. This gesture is commonly found in many 16th and 17th century portraits both religious and secular, such as El Greco's portrait of a nobleman held in the Prado Museum, Madrid. Unsigned. Dated 1695. Inscribed in Latin 'Aetatis anno 74', or 'Year of Age 74'. Handsomely presented in a painted black antique frame. On canvas on stretchers. Image size: 89 x 68cm.
