About the Item

William John Hennessy Thomastown 1839 - Rudgwick 1917 Portrait of the Artist's Daughters Circa 1880 Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard Signed bottom left 33 x 23.5 cm canvas 44 x 35 cm framed Provenance : Private Collection, Normandy, France. Excellent condition William John Hennessy (1839–1917) was an Irish-American painter born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland. His family emigrated to the United States in 1849, fleeing the aftermath of the Great Famine. Settling in New York, he studied at the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited from the age of seventeen and became an associate member in 1861. Hennessy first established himself as an illustrator for major American publications — Harper's Weekly, Appleton's Journal — before devoting himself fully to painting. In 1870, he moved to Europe, first to England and then to Normandy, where he would spend much of his life. His work is characterised by genre scenes imbued with gentleness and nostalgia: rural landscapes of Normandy and England, female figures in interiors or gardens, moments of peasant life captured in soft light and muted tones. Influenced by French naturalism and the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Hennessy excelled at rendering atmosphere — twilight, woodland paths, country lanes — with a delicate touch and a keen sense of composition. From the 1880s onwards, his style evolved towards a freer, more luminous manner, incorporating the influence of Impressionism: his brushwork became more visible, his palette lighter, and natural light itself became the true subject of his compositions. His paintings, often modest in scale, invite quiet contemplation and reflect a romantic sensibility tempered by close observation of the real world. A painting similar to ours, also depicting the artist’s daughters and titled “Dandelion Clock,” has appeared on the London art market (see photo). We find elements of composition and atmosphere that are similar.
