Still Life with Gladiolus, Floral Oil Painting in Blue Faience Vase
Still Life with Gladiolus, Floral Oil Painting in Blue Faience Vase

Still Life with Gladiolus, Floral Oil Painting in Blue Faience Vase

Located in Genève, GE

Dimensions with frame: 47 x 33,5 x 5,5 cm. Signed "Armand Leleux" in the lower right corner. A refined floral still life featuring vivid red gladiolus blossoms and delicate white flowers arranged in an elegant blue-and-white faience vase. Painted with subtle tonal harmonies and fluid brushwork, the composition embodies the quiet sophistication associated with late Impressionist and early modern European still life painting. The artist balances vibrant floral accents against a muted neutral background, allowing the bouquet’s organic forms and rich chromatic contrasts to emerge with remarkable freshness and delicacy. The decorative ceramic vase introduces an additional layer of visual refinement, evoking traditional French and Dutch still life aesthetics. Loose painterly handling, atmospheric softness, and naturalistic observation lend the work an intimate and timeless presence. The composition recalls the sensibility of Édouard Vuillard, Henri Fantin-Latour, and post-impressionist floral studies while maintaining a decorative elegance suited to both classic and contemporary interiors. An evocative and highly decorative floral composition ideal for collectors of Impressionist still lifes, botanical paintings, and refined European interior art. floral still life painting, impressionist flower painting, gladiolus artwork, blue and white vase painting...

De Wit Flowers Still life Paint Oil on canvas 18th Century Flemish Cupids Art
De Wit Flowers Still life Paint Oil on canvas 18th Century Flemish Cupids Art

De Wit Flowers Still life Paint Oil on canvas 18th Century Flemish Cupids Art

Located in Riva del Garda, IT

Jacob De Wit (Amsterdam, 1695 - 1754) attributable/ workshop Pair of Cupids with Garland of Flowers Oil on canvas 91 x 103 cm. - Framed 104 x 115 cm. Provenance: Christie's (London, Old master Painting 12.12.1996) lot 82 This magnificent composition depicts two cupids holding a garland of flowers, placed on a fine architecture with bas-reliefs and masks, presumably the top of a fountain. One of the two cupids sympathetically holds a part of it with his hands, while his head turns towards the viewer; the second cupid, on the other hand, must have clumsily broken the thread holding its end, and is sitting sullenly with a torch and a tear streaking his chubby cheek. The work, given its stylistic features and compositional taste, can be attributed to the Flemish artist Jacob de Wit (Amsterdam, 1695 - 1754), or to an artist from his workshop, with his typical triumphal and opulent style, which reveals clear influences from Rubens and Van Dijck, but also from Gerard de Lairesse...

Naturalistic still life painting by Dutch artist Leonardus Nardus. The work features three jugs or vases set against a patterned carpet. Currently hung in a carved gold frame. Retains the original gallery tag on the reverse. Signed in the front lower right corner. Dimensions Without Frame: H 27 in. x W 24 in. Artist Biography: Leonardus Nardus, born in Utrecht into the Dutch upper middle class, the son of an antiquarian, was a colorful character. After training at the Amsterdam Academy, he embarked on a brief and unsuccessful gold-hunting expedition to Argentina in 1889. He then settled in America, where he became an art dealer, eventually returning to Paris a few years later. As well as being an art collector, Nardus developed his own talents as a painter. Caught up by a taste for nomadism, Léo Nardus eventually settled in Tunisia, where he built a small palace in the seaside resort of...

Still-life paintings work as part of the decor in nearly every type of space.

Still-life art, which includes work produced in media such as painting, photography, video and more, is a popular genre in Western art. However, the depiction of still life in color goes back to Ancient Egypt, where paintings on the interior walls of tombs portrayed the objects — such as food — that a person would take into the afterlife. Ancient Greek and Roman mosaics and pottery also often depicted food. Indeed, still-life paintings frequently feature food, flowers or man-made objects. By definition, still-life art represents anything that is considered inanimate.

During the Middle Ages, the still life genre was adapted by artists who illustrated religious manuscripts. A common theme of these paintings is the reminder that life is fleeting. This is especially true of vanitas, a kind of still life with roots in the Netherlands during the 17th century, which was built on themes such as death and decay and featured skulls and objects such as rotten fruit. In northern Europe during the 1600s, painters consulted botanical texts to accurately depict the flowers and plants that were the subject of their work.

Leonardo da Vinci’s penchant for observing phenomena in nature and filling notebooks with drawings and notes helped him improve as an artist of still-life paintings. Vincent van Gogh, an artist who made a couple of the most expensive paintings ever sold, carried out rich experiments with color over the course of painting hundreds of still lifes, and we can argue that Campbell’s Soup Cans (1961–62) by Andy Warhol counts as still-life art.

While early examples were primarily figurative, you can find still lifes that belong to different schools and styles of painting, such as Cubism, Impressionism and contemporary art.

As part of the wall decor in your living room, dining room or elsewhere, a still-life painting can look sophisticated alongside your well-curated decorative objects and can help set the mood in a space.

When shopping for a still-life painting, think about how it makes you feel and how the artist chose to represent its subject. When buying any art for your home, choose pieces that you connect with. If you’re shopping online, read the description of the work to learn about the artist and check the price and shipping information. Make sure that the works you choose complement or relate to your overall theme and furniture style. Artwork can either fit into your room’s color scheme or serve as an accent piece. Introduce new textures to a space by choosing an oil still-life painting.

On 1stDibs, find a collection of still-life paintings in a wide range of styles and subject matter.
