About the Item

Rose Couture I is also featured in Icons in Bloom at MASH Gallery. The work introduces a luminous atmospheric field that surrounds the rose in layered red and violet gradients. Unlike Morris’ earlier flat and sharply contained pop compositions, this work integrates spray paint transitions that soften the boundary between figure and ground. The rose appears to radiate outward, shifting from static emblem to glowing presence. Historically, Pop Art foregrounded commercial imagery through mechanical repetition and bold contour. Morris retains the silkscreen lineage central to the movement while allowing painterly interruption and tonal gradation to activate the surface. The background becomes an energetic halo rather than a neutral support, subtly destabilizing the flatness traditionally associated with pop art painting. This work demonstrates Morris’ evolution toward more expressive, process-driven compositions he describes as “perfect imperfections.” By layering color and allowing subtle variations in tone, he expands the language of contemporary pop art into a more immersive visual experience that merges luxury, romance, and abstraction.

August Rose

August Rose

By Charles Pachter

Located in Toronto, Ontario

Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. The Barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. Playful and a touch irreverent, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana. The artist’s vast body of work includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Pachter’s works are widely sought-after and are an ideal selection for starting or continuing a collection of 20th-century Canadian art. Pachter's confident colors, sharp lines, and graphic qualities are instantly recognizable and continue to be a mainstay throughout his oeuvre. Completed in 2021, this exemplary painting introduces Pachter's flowers, a brand new subject for the artist that inspired a series of work early on in the pandemic. Realized in a time of uncertainty and despair, this tranquil piece is remarkably optimistic. Featuring a rose in full bloom, Pachter captures the center of the flower and depicts its alluring, outward expression in this fragrant piece. His characteristically bold, unmodulated colors flood the background of the canvas, maintaining his distinct graphic style in this otherwise supple composition. This piece serves as a striking example of Pachter's signature aesthetic, this time achieved through a fresh and entirely new subject. Pachter's work is represented in both public and private collections across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Portrait Gallery of Canada, The Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Pachter holds the prestigious position of Officer of the Order of Canada and is also a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee medal. "August Rose...
