About the Item

'Oranges and Apples', oil on canvas, still life by Guillaume Dulac (circa 1920s). A magnificent study of fruit and light painted with a deft touch and a delicate brushstroke. The evident quality and desirability of his artwork are incongruent with the recognition the artist received in his lifetime. His untimely death exacerbated this circumstance. Fortunately, the tide has turned and the current art market recognises his strength and skill as an artist. His works are now enthusiastically pursued at auction by loyal and determined international collectors. This painting is newly framed with a French-style linen slip. On the reverse side you will find partial labels and notes stating 'Cimaise' ('Chair Rail') and "681" with their meanings unknown. The artwork is very stable and in fair overall condition with some evident cracking in the paint. Given its age, this is to be expected and does not detract from the overall impression of the work. On the contrary, it simply enhances its characterful vintage qualities. It is signed by the artist in the lower right hand. Upon request, a video will be provided. About the Artist: Guillaume Dulac (1883-1929) is a French artist born in the 19th century. He was a close associate of other well known artists such as Charles Camoin and Albert Marquet. He exhibited his works in Paris' Salon des Indépendents in 1905, in the Salon de l'Union Artistique of Toulouse in 1908-1910 and had an artistic presence in the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. His last exhibit was in the Salon des Tuileries in June of 1929. In December of that same year, his body was recovered having drowned in the Seine river and then moved to the noted Père-Lachaise cemetery. Because of the evident quality and desirability of his art, In La Ciotat, France, near Marseille, there is a street named after this artist: l'Avenue Guillaume Dulac. 'Still Life with Pitcher', oil on paper, by Charles Réal (circa 1950s). Still-lifes make voyeurs out of all of us. No matter the era to which they belong, they always give us the sense that we’re spying on a table set for a night of gluttony or perhaps, romance. Whatever is set on the still-life table can transport us to another place limited only by our imaginations. What is not well known is that those tabletop items often had coded meanings. The secret meanings behind the paintings and their unofficial language spawned several sub-genres, including floral still life, breakfast paintings...

'Bouquet de Fleurs', oil on board, by Louis Toncini (1982). Painted towards the end of his career, this piece belongs to that part of his body of work which was lighthearted, optimistic and pleasing. It is a stunning still life characterised by Toncini's vibrant colours and textured layers of oil paint deftly applied. This vase holds the flowers of Toncini's native Provence and is a love letter from the artist to the viewer. In good overall condition. It is newly framed with a French-style linen slip. It is signed by the artist in the lower left hand. Upon request, a short video of this piece may be provided. (NB - On the reverse of this painting is another called 'Landscape in Saint Clément on the Durance' which is currently covered by the backing board. Image with accompanying photos to this listing.
