About the Item

FLORAL STILL LIFE is an original oil painting on canvas by the French born artist Lucy Hourdebaight (1901-1947). FLORAL STILL LIFE features an inviting interior scene visually centered with a hefty pottery vase filled with fresh garden flowers - pink hollyhocks, red pink butterfly bush, burgundy hibiscus, and stems of yellow black-eyed susans set on the table. Hourdebaight's modern style still life composition demonstrates her skillful use of drawing, color and spatial placement that may be attributed to her studies with Hans Hofmann as an art student at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts NYC. Despite her talent and creativity, she did not receive the recognition as a woman painter - a challenge faced by many women in the art world. Framed size - 35 in. x 43 in. Good vintage condition, signs of aging, art conservation treatment to the surface and relined canvas back, simple dark stained wood frame About the artist: Lucy Hourdebaight - born in Bordeaux France 1901 French painter and illustrator active in the interwar period. McIntosh shows his inventive use of collage using cut bits of colored paper in shades of red, brown, blue, pink, black. Visible are magazine print clippings for facial details, dishes, lettering layered with wildly expressive yellow, blue, green and white painted accents that create an energetic and rambunctious breakfast table scene. The viewer can't help but continue gazing at the frenzied movement and visual chatter going on in MORNING BREAKFAST, a captivating and irresistible painted collage by Karl A. McIntosh.
