About the Item

After Mary Fedden OBE R.A. PPRWA 1915-2012, was an English artist and teacher of art. She studied at the Slade School of Art in London and she painted portraits, murals and developed her own style of painting still life. She taught at the Royal College of Art, and her pictures can be found in a large number of collections throughout the UK. The original of this picture was originally painted by Fedden in 1984 and the whereabouts of the original painting is currently unknown, this picture is very slightly smaller than the original, it is initialed 'F' and is a recognised copy by a competent painter who clearly admired the work of Mary Fedden whose works are bright and lively as depicted here. The painting is currently housed in a temporary black frame which is included in the price, however I think it exposes the brightness of the colours, the frame could be changed by the new owner if required. I have included a short scholarly biography of the artist Mary Feddon for your interest. Mary Fedden (1915–2012) was an influential English painter and the first female tutor of painting at the Royal College of Art. Born in Bristol, she graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 1936, initially working on theater designs before devoting herself entirely to easel painting. During her long, celebrated career, she developed a distinctively charming style characterized by bold, flattened perspectives, vivid color pairings, and a whimsical approach to everyday objects. Fedden’s work often fused elements of modernism with naive art, drawing inspiration from French artists like Henri Matisse and Ben Nicholson. Alongside her husband, the respected artist Julian Trevelyan, she travelled extensively throughout Europe, gathering visual motifs that would populate her canvases for decades. Her iconic legacy is defined by her ability to elevate ordinary domestic scenes into poetic, magical compositions. In her 1984 masterpiece, Still Life with Bird, Fedden masterfully captures the quiet mystery of ordinary objects. The painting features a meticulously arranged tabletop set against a characteristically flattened backdrop, juxtaposing geometric shapes with the organic form of a single bird. Utilizing her signature muted yet luminous palette, she invites the viewer to look at familiar items with fresh curiosity.
