About the Item

Herb Ritts (1952-2002) was a Los Angeles-born photographer acclaimed for his celebrity portraits, nudes, and fashion photography from the 1970s onward. His dynamic career defied boundaries between art and commerce, blurring the lines between documentary and fantasy. His approach to portraiture and fashion photography is confident and minimal, with an emphasis on the textural and sculptural qualities of bodies. In the late 80s, his practice expanded beyond photography as he began directing major music videos, commercials, and ad campaigns. Ritts photographed many iconic supermodels and celebrities of the 1990s including Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Madonna to name a few. He also had countless features in the top fashion and pop culture publications including Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. This iconic photograph features musician k.d. lang and supermodel Cindy Crawford. It was featured in a groundbreaking cover story for the 1993 issue of Vanity Fair, profiling lang. The article took an in-depth look at the musician, including into her childhood, her experiences with fame, and her sexuality. Being photographed alongside a supermodel was lang's vision, and Crawford was thrilled to be a part of it (asked only the night before the shoot by Ritts). In this expertly-toned photograph, the pair are transfixed with one another, perfectly positioned: lang in a barber's chair with shaving cream applied to her face and neck, and Crawford statuesquely standing over her. Challenging gender stereotypes, this photograph was considered bold and risqué for its time. Not only an iconic image in Ritts' oeuvre, the photograph represents a landmark moment in pop culture and queer visibility. Over 30 years after the photo was taken, it continues to live on in the collective cultural memory. In 2003, The Herb Ritts Foundation was founded following the artist's untimely death. The foundation continues the artist's philanthropic efforts and art activism in support of HIV/AIDS research and advocacy. The artist was the recipient of GLAAD Media's Pioneer Award in 2008. Weegee "Sailor and Girl Kissing"

Weegee "Sailor and Girl Kissing"

By Weegee

Located in Toronto, Ontario

Weegee (1899-1968) was equally fascinated and inspired by cinema and all of its tangents, from Hollywood movie stars to ordinary civilians going to the movies. While Weegee is typically associated with crime/disaster images, the broad theme of "entertainment" is a major component of his oeuvre. An interesting and provocative sub-genre of his cinema-related work are his images of couples (often heavy-petting) in movie theatres. Recent scholarship has established that many of Weegee's supposed clandestine images were actually staged or arranged with friends or co-operative strangers. Nevertheless, Weegee created these photographs in the dark with an array of clever techniques including infrared film, filtered flashbulb and triangular prism lens. Employed in shots such as this one, the prism lens would allow the artist to “see around corners,” useful at times when his subjects were in compromising locations. These images of kissing couples, Weegee wrote in 1959, were “his best seller, year in and year out.” "Sailor and GIrl at the Movies...
