About the Item

An extraordinary original silver gelatin black-and-white photograph capturing the energy of Place du Combat in Paris, France, circa 1930. This dynamic street scene offers a glimpse into the bustling Parisian life of the era. Features: Authentic Silver Gelatin Print Photography. Press Photography. Title: Place du Combat in Paris, circa 1930. Provenance: Private Collection. Image Size: 4.37 in high (11.1 cm) by 5.98 in wide (15.2 cm) – Archivally matted in a 17 by 13 in mat. Presentation: The piece will be securely shipped in a 17 by 13 in mat, designed to fit a standard-sized frame. Markings: No ink stamp, no legend. This rare photographic artifact preserves a moment in time when Place du Combat was alive with movement, character, and history. Note: This place corresponds to the old door of Pantin on the wall of the General Farmers, as one would have left by this door to go to Pantin. It then took the name Porte du Combat because of the animal fights that took place there from 1778, when they ceased to occur in the rue de Sèvres. It was sometimes called Porte Saint-Louis because of its proximity to the Saint-Louis Hospital. During the Battle of Paris in 1814, the naval gunners, the National Guard, and Polytechnician students heroically defended the gate. The road connecting the former towns of Belleville and La Villette was incorporated into the Parisian road network by a decree dated May 23, 1863. In 1871, the door was the last entrenchment of the insurgents of the Paris Commune. On April 13, 1918, during the First World War, a shell launched by the Big Bertha exploded in the Place du Combat. The "Place du Combat" was established on August 12, 1903, and was renamed "Place du Colonel Fabien" by a decree dated July 7, 1945. Place du Colonel-Fabien is located between the 10th and 19th arrondissements of Paris. It is best known for housing the headquarters of the French Communist Party, designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
