Ediciones Poligrafa, Barcelona - Redfern Gallery, London About the Publication: Ediciones Poligrafa, Barcelona - Redfern Gallery, London, published in 1979, represents a significant collaborative exhibition album produced to accompany an international presentation of artists associated with Ediciones Poligrafa, one of Spain’s most influential postwar publishing houses. Conceived as both a documentation of artistic production and a collectible portfolio, the album brought together works by leading contemporary artists whose practices reflected the dynamic evolution of European abstraction and printmaking in the late twentieth century. Produced at the renowned La Poligrafa workshop in Barcelona, the publication exemplifies the high technical standards and collaborative spirit that defined Spanish printmaking during this period. Issued in conjunction with the exhibition at the Redfern Gallery in London, the album underscores the growing international dialogue between Spanish and British art institutions, while serving as a testament to the role of publishers and print ateliers in disseminating modern and contemporary art across cultural boundaries. About the Artist: Antoni Tapies (1923–2012) was a Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and theorist whose groundbreaking fusion of material texture, symbolic abstraction, and meditative depth made him one of the most influential European artists of the postwar era. Born in Barcelona, Tapies transformed the painted surface into a tactile field of memory and spirituality, layering sand, marble dust, and found objects to explore the intersection of matter, time, and transcendence. Influenced by the innovations of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Georges Braque, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, he expanded their explorations of form and meaning into a poetic vision grounded in texture and gesture. His philosophical approach anticipated the conceptual concerns of later artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns, who similarly challenged the boundaries between material and idea. Over a prolific career spanning seven decades, Tapies’s works bridged painting, sculpture, and installation, earning him major retrospectives at MoMA, the Guggenheim, and the Reina Sofia, and cementing his reputation as a master of European modernism. The highest price ever paid for an Antoni Tapies artwork is approximately 2.83 million USD, achieved in 2014 at Christie's New York for Gran ocra amb incisions (Large Ochre with Incisions) (1961).
