About the Item

Josh Rowell Old Farm, 26.11.23, 30 Min, 2023 Giclee and acrylic on canvas 50 x 70 cm 19.7 x 27.6 inches Josh Rowell generates his artistic vision by focusing on technological advances that shape our contemporary lives, communicating our increasingly mediated human interactions within the confines of visual art. The artist juxtaposes traditional, handmade techniques; with the intangible nature of the digital age. This position between the real and virtual produces a complex body of work that explores and reshapes information, highlights changes in human interation and celebrates the hand-made in a time that is increasingly being enveloped by the virtual. Born in 1990 in Kent, England, Rowell graduated from Kingston Art School in 2013, where he received a first class BFA with honours. Following a course in Art Criticism at Central Saint Martins college, Rowell returned to Kingston Art School for an MFA in 2015, where he was awarded a first- class distinction. His works have been exhibited in London, New York, Miami, Seattle, Basel, Hong Kong and Mexico and his works are part of public collections including the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Gregorian Foundation in Washington, London Kingston University’s contemporary art collection, and the Matilda collection in San Miguel De Allende. In 2017/18 he had his first museum exhibition at the Palacio Nacional de Guatemala. Rowell won the Public Choice award at the VIA Arts Prize 2017, and was included in Future Now, the yearly publication by Aesthetica listing the 100 most interesting emerging artists of the year. In 2019 he was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London and later in the year was invited to participate in the 9th edition of the Dentons Art Prize for which he was announced as joint-winner in 2020. Later in 2020 he was selected for the group exhibition ‘False Memory’ at Rugby Art Museum, UK, curated by renowned British Artist Lindsay Seers. In 2021, Rowell was included in the exhibition NFT IRL, at Firetti Cotmeporary, Dubai, which was the first exhibition of it’s type to show physical works each accompanied by an NFT counterpart. Josh Rowell has work in public, corporate and private collections in UK, USA, Canada, China, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Monte Carlo, Australia, Ireland, Russia, Kuwait, Bermuda, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, and Peru.

"Water Well" color photograph, autumn farm landscape painting on abstract wall

"Water Well" color photograph, autumn farm landscape painting on abstract wall

By Phillip Buehler

Located in New York, NY

18"x24", signed, editioned color photograph. A lush Fall farm landscape with greens fields, orange trees and red barn painting is contrasted by the placement on a highly distressed wall. Multiple layers of paint in various colors from teal blue, pink, beige, and orange are peeled and cracked creating an abstract pattern of color behind the landscape painting in this photograph. Time and age have created an image of beautiful decay with the cracked and peeling paint, which creates an amazing visual backdrop to the painting. The pairing of the two in this photograph compliment each other on a sensory level and bring out thoughts of nostalgia and longing. Phillip Buehler is a New York based photographer who documents the deterioration and remnants of neglected architecture constructed in the recent past. He is arguably the first to coin the neologism “modern ruins”. His photographs published in “Woody Guthrie’s Wardy Forty,” have won numerous awards, documenting the singer/songwriter/activist’s life at Greystone Park Psychiatric. He received his BA at Rutgers University and his MFA in photography at School of Visual Arts. Phillip Buehler has been featured in Art in America, The New York Times, Art News, The Art...
